Suddenly Won't Start

Went out to start my 96 Ram 3500 just to make sure since it sat for about 10 days. Bam as usual it starts right up. Let it run about 45 secs then turn it off and go into house to get stuff. Back to the truck in about 10 minutes. Nothing,,,,will not start, cranks like it should but will not lite off. *** I have had this truck for 21 years.....Give me some direction....PLEASE

Is the Fuel shut off solenoid [FSS for short] lifting all the way?
Try turning the key to the on position and lift it up with your hand then turn the key to the start position. I bet it fires right up.

N/P but the OP hasn't been back to check since he posted the question.......

Oh well, moving it to the 12 valve section as the emergency must be over.

Where do I go from here?????

Thanks to everyone that responded to me dilema last week. It is the FSS and I went on E-Bay as someone said and found the aftermarket unit complete with brackets and relay. Here is my question now, Why The F..... do they range in price from $35 to almost $300 for aftermarket units NOT any of them being OEM Mopar parts. There are alot of the aftermarket units having been sold. Which way do I go???

Thanks in advance for the direction
Mike

Are you sure it's the solenoid itself, and that it's not only gummed up?

Take a look at
Larryb - Dodge Fuel Solenoids - Dodge Fuel System parts - Dodge Cummins Diesel

there are some parts and explanations on how and what goes wrong in this system.
It would be a shame to buy a solenoid for a lot of money if it just needs a fusible link..

As Alpine has said, you probably just have a gunked up solenoid. They very rarely ever die.

Mine actually had the heim joint rust up, many though as the rubber boot disintegrates, get full of dust and dirt and get sticky. The usual fix is to order a new boot, remove, clean and replace.

As for the variable prices, that's just the nature of the beast, everyone is trying to make the most money they can, and it really pays to look around. A very good example is the first gen FSS solenoid, those in the know buy the same exact thing for a VW for between 12 and 15 bucks, genuine Cummins can go as high as 250 bucks...... and they all have the same Bosch part number!

Kind of reminds me back in the day, the same exact muffler for a Caddy was about 4X the price of the Chevrolet muffler........ Marketing told us that Caddy owners weren't nearly as price sensitive to keep their cars quiet as Chevy owners were.

P.S. There is no Mopar part, they buy it from Bosch and put their part number on the box.
