| Question: | | | Answer: | Old Smoky's Power Pin
Results & My Thoughts
Recently, Mike was kind of enough to send me his power pin to do some testing and give my thoughts on the modification. In this article, I hope to shed some light on the results and give my impression of the Power Pin.
Installation
Installation is very simple and allows even the owner with very limited skills install the pin with the full color instructions provided with the pin. Also in the kit, you will find a thinner nylon washer that replaces the thicker nylon washer. This allows the pin to reach its full potential by letting it make a full upward stroke on the fuel pin face.
Results
The first test was done with the green and red eccentric cone spring off of an 89 model. Since this spring is stiffer than the silver spring which is put on some 92 models, the spring seems to hold back the power longer than the silver spring does. However, I could definately tell a difference between my stock 75 cone. Boost was up by 4psi and there was less smoke at low end. Acceleration was a little more noticeable, but at cruising speed, the truck was very responsive. EGT's seen a 100* cruising speed gain, and WOT EGT's seen a 150* increase.
For the next test, I installed the stock silver spring which came with the 92 model. I should note that this spring is softer than the red/green spring which allows it to compress and recieve full fueling quicker below 16psi. (However, even with the added fueling at lower psi, I have noticed that smoke reduction is on par with the reduction I seen with the green/red spring.) Definately a change in performance accross the whole power band with most concentrated on the mid to upper end. I have noticed less smoke at low boost conditions and alot better throttle response under light to moderate acceleration verses the red/green spring. But, I feel that the mid to upper range is where the pin really performs. In 4th gear, I found myself reaching 75mph very quickly. Shift on out to 5th gear and it just picks right up and before I knew it, I was running well over 100mph. At cruising speed (65-70mph) less throttle is needed to accelerate. In fact, just moving your foot slightly definately creates a seat of the pants feel that must be felt to be appreciated. Mileage seemed to stay at 18-19mpg which is pretty good if you ask me for such a gain in performance.
Impression
Do I reccomend one? You bet I do. With the addition of my modifications already done, and Old Smokys Power Pin, this truck REALLY perfroms. I feel that the pin really brings out the potential of your truck by letting the fuel pin recieve its maximum protrusion. You guys setting on the fence about this modification need to really look hard at this one. Owners have reported an average gain of 20-25hp and 60ftlb tq. over a stock pin set at the deepest setting and going straight to this pin. This modification rates right up there with new injectors. Mike has really gone out of his way in time and money to offer a great product to the first gen customers. Thank you Mike! You can recieve the pin by E-mailing Mike or call Lenny at Dyno Mite Diesel Performance 1-866-774-DYNO.
