Wierd thermostat Issue

On the drive from Colorado to Nebraska the truck ran amazing in the cold. I got 4 miles from Omaha and suddenly my coolant temps sky rocket. Turns out the water pump took a dirt nap and an entire radiator worth of coolant baithed my engine bay. Got to my brothers and changed out the water pump(thank god they are so easy on these things), and refilled the antifreeze. I also changed the thermostat with the 190 degree replacement. Before my temps were a rock solid 188 degrees no matter what I did. Now with the new thermostat my temps cycle from 195 degrees to 208 degrees up and down. Is this too hot for this engine? Thanks for the help.

Bryan

I would say your temps are fine. Did you use a genuine Cummins thermostat?

I'd run a 180. Only because when towing My truck will come up 10deg. more then normal. I don't like anything over 205 degrees myself.

If you had gone to a certified Cummins shop, They would have asked for the motor # and given[sold] you the proper 180 degree that Cummins calls for. Only a Cummins part should go in there or you will be plagued with temperature swings instead of the rock steady 180 that the Cummins part will give you.

01's require a 190 and were delivered new with it. A 180 is fine, however.

Diesels like it hot and run well in that temp range.

208 isn't really that hot. I wouldn't sweat a 13 degree variation. You're fine.
