whos on

I was just wondering... is there a way to tell who's on line when in a forum?
other then trying to read the small print at the bottom of the main forum menu .
I have seen other sites that have like a red dot next to there user name for not online and green dot for online . just thought it would make it east to see if you were posting to some one waiting for an answer or if they checked out already?
Thanks
Robert
