Whining CTD

I just bought a 97 CTD auto with 64000 miles on it and i have a whining sound that seems to be coming from the driver side under the hood sound like it coming from around the area of the injector pump or the powersteering pump. It is real noticeable at idel in neutural when you give it a little throttle.you can also hear it while you are driving the whining increases with rpm's. The next problem i have is coming from the exhaust tail pipe/ muffler area it sound like there is something loose i have checked it out can't find anything loose i am thinking there is something loose in side the muffler i can put my foot on tail pipe and it stops it does't make the noise all the time.Any help with the two small irrtating sounds would be greatly appreciated.

Re:Whining CTD

Welcome aboard Ray!!!

Well, this is a generic thing but I remember there was a TSB out for a whining noise, I think yours is different.

My older unit has a whine from the power steering pump when its cold. I think its something to do with the bypass valve inside the pump buzzing. It does seem to pass after a while. I would check the fluid level/condition and see if there is anything there.

For the muffler rattle, check for a broken or loose bracket around the muffler, sometimes the brackets look attached but will be cracked around the mount to the pipe.

It also may be as simple as checking your idle speed. Too low of an idle speed (below 750) usually starts to shake things.

Good Luck and again Welcome to the DTR!!

J-eh

Re:Whining CTD

You mentioned your muffler.... alot of these trucks had a TSB for muffler whinning. A lot of the trucks would whine from different muffler setups.
