What's my next step?

After taking the bed off my truck I started scraping and wire wheeling the frame( because a scraper and wire wheel are cheap and I'm a poor dodge owner), I've got it pretty well down to bare steel. It still has some surface rust so I'm wondering what to paint it with. The truck won't see winter or the four letter S word(salt, there I said it) so could I just prime and paint it or is there something else I should do to it first?

Go down and get yourself a gallon of tremclad or rustoleum, and a brush, and go to town.

I do not advocate those POR15 type coatings. Paint or nothing in my world.

I was wondering about that stuff. It's pretty expensive for something that might work. I was thinking tremclad but wasn't sure. Think I should prime it first?

You don't really want to paint over any rust, it will just keep rusting. One option is to use some rust converter on the rust that is there, then prime it. You really should prime bare metal before you paint it...Mark

before you paint, read the prep instructions, clean surface is not easy with all of the obstructions on frames, I finish with a hot water pressure washer, which you can do at a local car wash, the hot water will break down any oil accumulations, let it dry, good to .go

Use a phosphoric acid metal prep then prime and paint.
this is what I use. Thin it 50% with water. I spray it on with a cheepie spray bottle. get two.
use one for the metal etch and the other for water.do a section at a time and don't let it get dry( that's what the water is for.) You can brush the rusty areas with a wire brush wile wet to speed things up a bit. rinse with a hose aad wipe or better yet blow off with shop air.
Use safety glasses and rubber gloves.

Any rust will turn black when deactivated.

hope this helps
