If you do a little research on line about the plasma tv's you will not spend your money in that direction

Research the High End Plasmas, it will be worth your time

Through a lot of research I have found that most people are very ill-informed on the pros and cons of both types of sets. As the technology has gotten better in both sets, the prominent problems with each type of sets have become less and less noticeable or have gone away all together.

I too first bought into all the LCD is better hype. I bought a Samsung LNT-4071F in early 08 (which is a 40" 1080p 120hz set with CCFL backlighting). It was a great TV and still is a really good TV but as it has gotten older then blacks have become less black and I noticed that the backlighting is not very even and almost blotchy in very dark scenes. EVERY LCD TV with CCFL backlighting I have seen eventually develops this problem to some extent. Sometimes you can barely notice and sometimes it makes the TV unwatchable.

I thought at first maybe it was just my 40" unit so when I wanted a bigger TV I bought a Samsung LN-52a650 (which is a 52" 10080p 120hz set with CCFL backlighting) It had the same problem mentioned above very bad right out of the box and so did its replacement, so I got rid of that and started researching the TVs with LED backlighting and plasmas.

After more research than I ever wanted to do I ended up with a Pioneer Elite Kuro 50" Plasma. MSRP $4,449 (but Best Buy had mistakenly marked the unit at $2,499 so I bought it on the spot) In my opinion and that of Cnet as well this is absolutely the best picture you will find on any TV period. See for yourself. I know JFaulkner knows what I'm talking about.

If you read this much I would recommend a high end plasma if you are really interested in the best picture quality and deepest blacks, and you can afford it. If you want to stay a bit cheaper, buy an LCD TV with LED backlighting, not CCFL. The LED backlighting will give you much better blacks and help the colors of the LCD "pop" a bit more. With that said I would stay away from units where the LEDs create the backlight from the sides of the TV (like Samsung's line of so called LED TVs which are actually LCD TVs) and get one where the LEDs are directly behind the panel (Something like a Samsung LN55A950). I would highly recommend to stay away from a set with CCFL backlighting with all the excellent other choices out there.

For image refresh rate 120hz seems adequate but if you can get 240hz for a good price go for it, but I don't think there is really much difference the average person will see past 120hz. If you buy a plasma of course this doesn't really matter. The Pioneer Elite KURO plasmas adjust their refresh rate to the input source.

Hope this helps somebody.

I wasn't determined to get the latest and greatest, like 240Hz, or even 120, because the 60Hz model already has a picture far superior to the 15 year old unit it replaced.
I just bought the exact same tv, as it is a bedroom tv I didn't need the 120 or 240 hrtz. Plus I have a french door on one side and a window on the other so the glare would have been terrible with a plasma.

OK, help me out here on the refresh rate. I understand more refreshes per second helps smooth out the image on fast action (and a slow refresh causes pixilation), but how does a fast refresh make regular (non-HD) channels choppy?

I looked at a Samsung today with the Automotion 120Hz sampling. They were scrolling text across the bottom of the screen and the difference was EXTREMELY noticeable between having the sampling on or off. But what exactly is the Automotion sampling doing for you? Is it just a 120Hz refresh or something different?

I picked up the Vizio 55" 240hz LED at Costco for ~$1800 the week before Christmas.
(Merry Christmas to ME)

The picture is very nice, at a price ~$1000 less than the Samsung.
The Samsung IS only 1/2 inch or so thick, the Vizio is about the same thickness as the Vizio LCD version.
(But I don't plan on watching the SIDE of the tv. )

when you say "makes them choppy" do you mean the faster refresh rate makes regular TV choppy?
Just the opposite. Faster refresh rate makes them smoother. You ever notice when you see a computer on TV (newsrooms on the news are the ones I've seen most) how you can see a black bar move up the screen over and over like the old TV's that would roll if the signal wasn't just right? Monitors refresh more slowly (mostly 60hz). You will notice it the most with crawlers on the bottom of the screen (weather info, etc.) They tend to get choppy with the slower refresh rate.
