Troubleshooting clock spring

Is there a method to troubleshoot a clock spring?

I broke mine the last time I replaced my steering box. After installing the new clock spring, the air bag light continues to stay on, but my cruise now works.

I'm thinking I got a defective clock spring, but would like to troubleshoot it if possible.

If something goes wrong with the airbag system such as the clockspring it sets a permanent code.
You need a scanner to erase it even after it's fixed.

Can someone verify this. Would AutoZone be able to erase the code?

Here's more details of my issue:
I'm on my 3rd clockspring. Long story short, I broke them while swapping through steering boxes. When I broke the 1st clockspring, the air bag light came on and the CC would not work. I replaced that clockspring and everything was great - the air bag light went away and I regained CC. Again, after breaking this clockspring, same symptoms, no CC and air bag light came on. So, when I replaced the 2nd clockspring with the current clockspring, I expected the same results - It would fix CC and turn off the air bag light. It did fix the CC, but the air bag light remains on.

When I put my new one in the air bag light went off and the sruise started working without the use of any scan tool to delete codes.

If your having that much trouble with different clock springs, I'd be looking at the connectors for a bent pin of faulty connection.

Does your cruise, radio controls, horn still work? I broke mine replacing the steering gearbox as well. Napa sells a clockspring for years up to 2001, not 2002, I had to buy mine from Dodge and was more pricey. It fixed the problem and everything works again. All my steering wheel electronics (radio/cruise) ran thru the clock spring, go figure
