Re:TICKING
Hey,
I have noticed two types of ticking with my truck. The first noise I hear is under a load and is very rapid and has no particular order to it(sounds more like a rattle). I think that is the valves. The second "tick" I notice at idle it is not very rapid but is orderly and sounds like it is coming from the injection pump. I can also hear really distinctly once I step out of my truck. I have a buddy whose truck sounds the same and always has, he is at 200,000+ miles. So I figured I could live with it. I hardly notice it now with the straight pipe exhaust and all :

Hope this helps,
-Chris

Re:TICKING
Have you changed your injectors recently? when I went from stock to P.O.D.'s there was a new ticking which turned out to be the injectors, and I had a few small exhaust leaks.

Re:TICKING
Greetings everyone,

My 1992 1st gen. has recently doveloped a "tick" too. The ticking noise my truck emits has a thin, metallic sound. The ticking noise is very irratic.

(Example: tick.....tick..tick.tick...tick....tick.. tick....tick).

The source of ticking seems to be coming from underneath the truck somewhere. I have not yet pinpointed the exact location. I cannot hear the ticking noise when listening in the engine compartment. I hope nothing major has failed or broken. The truck only emits the ticking sound when the engine is warm or at it's proper operating temperature. I first noticed this ticking noise after I switched to Shell Rotella engine oil. Whether the engine oil switch has anything to do with the ticking noise, I don't know? If anyone has any ideas as to what this ticking noise could be, please let me know. The ticking noise is driving me crazy!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,

Nicholas R. Gajewski

Re:TICKING
Guys, guys, guys,,,, what am I going to do with you all....
Ok, since it's so hard to nail down it's location... here's my high tech suggestion... don't laugh it's worked for me many times...
Get a piece of garden hose, oh, 3' long to use as a stethescope, now, if you want to really go high tech, stuff a kitchen funnel into the end. Put the other end against your ear.
I kid you not, this has worked for me lots of times. I can nail down which valve is the noisy one, which injector is sounding different and may be slightly out of balance too.
One major caution though... keep the end away from spinning parts, I **** near slapped myself silly once, not pretty.. :P
Bob.

Re:TICKING
Great idea. I have used sticks before in the past. It might not have been pretty at the time but I bet it was rather funny once you got over what happened
