Things to do to the motor while I have it out

I am pulling the motor from my truck this week. I am going to be moving it from the D truck in my sig to the W truck in my sig. What things should I do to it while I have it out?

Here is my current list:

1) steam clean
2) KDP
3) EGT probe (I know I can do this with the motor in too, but it will be nice and easy with it on a stand)

It turns out, HF had an engine stand that can hold 2000 lbs for 100 dollars. I picked it up and am going to make a bracket to hold the motor from the front as well as the back. Should keep it plenty sturdy.

Thanks,
Russ

Id recommend maybe stuffing a new camshaft in it.

Change the oil pan gasket, the rear main seal, front seal(when you do KDP) and check carefully for any other leaks you may have. Upgrade the fan(someone said dodge came out with a more efficient fan type) the belts, T-stat, and all your hoses(every one of them). If you plan on putting in guages, depending on type, plan ahead if there are any tough spots to get to for sensor installation.
Oh, yeah, paint the engine!!

Great Recommendations

I didn't do all of the above , just the bare minimum... I had to get it out of the garage and into the crew. I have been traveling so much I didn't have time to do all that stuff. But yeah check for leaks. Definitely Front and Rear Crank Seals.Fans and belts can go on anytime, hoses.. But if you wanted to do a pan gasket that would be the only time to do it... Paint and dress n polish would be bling yah. Pyro drill for the manifold yes...

If you have any plans for a piston lift pump it would be easier now rather than leaning over the fender. Otherwise it's a pretty good list so far.

updated list

1) steam clean
2) kdp
3) EGT probe
4) leak check
5) front and rear seals
6) piston lift pump (thanks for that one...I would have forgotten
7) t-stat (another one I would have forgotten)
8) belts and hoses

I'd love to take the time to paint the motor, but I will likely not have it. Maybe I'll just clean up the valve covers and polish them or something....I supposed I should have a little bling

Thanks for the help,
Russ

If the motor was in front of a manual tranny, or is going to be in front of one, I would at least put a new thrust bearing in it.

Also a new rear cam plug.

Also, new motor mounts should be on the list, along check the frame areas in the engine compartment of the truck you wil end up using(the W250) before the engine is back in. Look for cracks, like where the power steering is mounted. I read somewhere that that area is susceptible to cracking. Weld while you have access.

If you can swing it $$$ wise, O-ring the head and upgrade the head studs, upgrade the valve springs. When doing the oil pan, plan for another oil return port for if you ever run twins one day. Look in the sticky or do a search on twins. BC847 did twins and he has pics on his install, showing the oil pan work in great detail.

Definitely new Throwout bearing! I agree. Might as well grab a new clutch off ebay sachs for 400 and resurface the flywheel, boring out the center for the ball bearing input shaft bearing. I did those ones as well as the lift pump. Cutting the insulation was a breeze with it out. It would've been a lot harder IN the truck.

The only internal mod i'd do to it, is a cam from PDR. like a quickspool, there like $400 and get you up to 2mpg better from what i says, faster spool up and stuff

If you shooting to make a fun truck and don't know what you'll be doing in the future for performance but you want a good running truck..... go ahead and pull the head off and have it sent out, port/polish work and get it o-ringed. then order a marine head gasket and install the head with some studs and you'll be good to go . You'll have a more bulletproof motor ready for HIGH hp.
