Something very strange just happened......

I need a little help. I just drove my dodge to my shop to hook to the boat; when I turned it off, it didn't want to stop. I mean it didn't run like normal, but it sounded almost like it was trying to run on 1 cylinder or something. I couldn't choke it down by putting it in gear, but if I turned the key back on it just started to run again normally. It did this several times, so I pulled it back out into the yard. It shut off normally that time, so I cranked it probably 20 times in a row, with no problems. What's up with this???? Any info you guys can give is very much appreciated.

I did a search on starting problems and there was a lot mentioned about the starter contacts; I have been having an intermittent problem with the truck not turning over every so often, but the second try it works fine. Could the starter contacts have stuck?

Probably stuck starter contacts. Check that you didn't blister the paint on the solenoids for starter and fuel shutoff. They may be toasted inside and fail soon.

Thanks for the info. I drove the truck to a fuel injection shop and talked to the owner there. He said he had not heard of one doing what mine dd, but if it were him he would start with the starter relay. It wasn't expensive and easy to change, so I replaced it. If that doesn't do it, I'll do the starter contacts next.

Okay, the starter relay did not solve the "turn the key but no joy" problem. I guess my next project will be starter contacts.

Did they look worn and grooved?

Smile

One of them looked pretty good, but the other was badly worn, (down to the thickness of a sheet of paper). Been driving it for several days now with no more problems.
