Semantics. It IS the current standard but only for the current over the road engines in production. New engine = new specs. Nowhere do the CJ-4 specs imply that they will meet the same specs the CI-4 was intended to comply with.

Within the context of this discussion, "current" would be the 07.5 and later 6.7's. Many of us still have 07 and down engines which have been proven to have different oil additive package requirements.

Read THIS. This is technical oil mumbo jumbo dumbed down into plain english by a lubrication engineer. There are some very good reasons to use CI-4 in an 07 and down engine. Also, note how well Valvoline Premium Blue non-synthetic CI-4 stacked up against many CONSIDERABLY more expensive oils including most of the synthetics. It is a good read.

I guess the API engineers who designed the specs are lying when they say this:

"API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories."

I'm not going to worry about it... I'm using Delo-400 LE CJ-4 in my '05..

The engineers aren't lying to you at all....as much as I have my struggles with engineers, they are not the ones to issue such statements. That is the marketing department talking....and they are good at what they do. At some point, you must move beyond hype and accurately define what you think "better" or "exceeds" means in this context. Research for yourself based on the technical aspects of the oil and what additives have what benefits and you will quickly see that CJ-4 is most certainly not the highest performing oil for engines like ours. The massive reduction in ZDDP for one is something to make note of and take seriously - and that is certainly not the only thing. Read the article. I never suggested you should be worried - just better informed if you are going to argue CJ-4 is better.

Wrong. JD will make the CI-4+ oil long after your truck is gone. This oil is for all their farm & industrial equipment, which is considered offroad use. Their existing customers that operate equipment built before 2009 is hugh, and a large part of their service revenues. They won't eliminate this line of oil products. I asked one of the counter guys at my local JD shop about your 'assumption', he just laughed.

Yes, that is life. That just seems to be the way it is. If you want the best, you have to spend the time to source it out yourself....you simply cannot assume what is on the shelf in your local store is adequate if your expectations are to have the best oil for your application.

I have gone through all of this before with sourcing oil with adequate ZDDP for my 454 BBC - it isn't so easy to find or verify......but it IS out there and it isn't going anywhere so long as there is a market for it.

Turned into a thread requiring 2 boxes of popcorn!

Hard to believe there are still those buying the hype about CJ-4.
Sure it meets/exceeds the CI-4 minimum specs..... it just won't hold up as long, BECAUSE, of the lower levels of Zinc & Phosphorous.... and lower TBN.
I'd use it if I had to..... but I'd go back to changing oil at 4-5,000 miles. And, from day one, I still would not have the protection of a good CI-4 oil.

How many miles do you run the Amsoil HD 15W40? Do you use the Amsoil filters, too?

Forgot to add that the CJ-4 spec is rated as such with ULSD only.. without all that sulfur..

I'll follow the trend as diesel fleets across the country are doing, and go with CJ-4 in my pre-07 truck..

What about the Valvoline Premium Blue CLASSIC that is only avaliable in 5 gallon, and 55 gallon drums? Its supposed to be the same formula as they use to make before the CJ oil came out.

There are several different premium blues. What spec is it? I use Premium Blue CI-4+ in 5 gallon pails.

Pretty easy to find. I get mine from Summit Racing. it's made by Comp Cams. GM also sells it. I'v heard that STP Oil Treatment is a zinc additive but I can't confirm that.

This is a big issue (and has been for a while) with old car crowd - like Mustangs and Camaros. Those old engines are all flat tappets. The lack of zinc cause the cam lobes to get wiped out fairly quickly. Sometimes in the first hour of running. Newer engies all have roller tappets, so it's not an issue.

To combat that, we used to use diesel CI-4 oils, like Rotella. Now we add ZDDP additives. That keeps the lifters and cams alive.

I am using Moble 1 for Turbo Diesel Truck and it meets all of these standards (API CJ-4, CI-4+, CI-4, CH-4 , and the ACEA E7/E5). Not sure what all of these standards represent but it looks like the Mobil 1 has it covered.
