i`m looking for another truck but the prices in ca. are high and not as many as other states.

I don`t what a smog test is on a diesel in calif. , just wondering if i bought a truck out of state and brought it back here what kinda of hassels am i going to run into if any trying to register ?

Ca. is the biggest pain in the *** on geting a car or truck smogged.

They check to make sure you have a Cat and no CARB illegal power adders then they snap the throttle to check for excessive smoke. My last smog they did not snap the throttle.

If you buy an unmodified 05 or 06, you'll be ok. Those years are 50 state models.

The above post is correct. It is mostly a visual. They make sure the cat is there and that no programmers are there. Also they check for non-compliant add ons like a different turbo or what not.

Many of the shops that know diesels-- as opposed to the chain places-- are more lenient in their observations.

You'll also need to weigh it. Remove the tailgate,spare and drive in on fumes. That weight will determine your weight fee. It will have to be smogged. As mentioned make sure all the emissions,turbo etc are stock. A use fee(sales tax) will be due also. If the seller will write you a bill of sale around the wholesale value that'll help. The DMV is hip to lowballing.

As i posted in a another thread.

I had a 06 mega for a short time. It was already smogged when i bought it from a used car lot and the gov. crooks (the dmv) nailed me for $1000.00 for weight fee, license ,etc.

What is the Cat ? Is it the same as cat converter on a gas car?

What is carb?

California Air Resources Board. If you bought it from a California used car lot the tax and fees would have been included. We're lucky we don't have to pay property tax on boats and vehicles like some states.
Cat is short for catalytic convertor.
