Commercial Car haulers

What plates are you running?? I'm in the process of putting Commercial plates on a 3500, along with DOT # and IFTA. Iknow they keep talking about more than 26k GVWR needs a CDL. I have one but guy that works for me doesn't, so if the truck GVWR is 10k and trailer GVWR is 24k does that mean he needs them?? OR is it how i plate the truck?? If i plate it under 26k he's ok?? What wieght are you car hauler's plate your trucks?? I know your combination wieght (truck, trailer load) has to be pretty high up there hauling 3 or so cars??

I'm not a commercial hauler but if I were I would want a CDL period. In VA I believe towing a trailer over 10K requires CDL at least if commercial use. Don't take my thoughts on that but check your state CDL requirements.

Nation wide, if the gvw of the truck and trailer are over 26000 a CDL is required. It does not matter what it is plated for. If you call your local state police barracks and ask to speak with the DOT officer, they will be able to tell you. I do know what I am talking about though, I used to own trucking company.

So your saying its the GVW not the GVWR right? Actual wieght when you roll up on a scale over 26k truck trailer load. Not so much what truck and trailer are capable of GCVWR?? Thats where i had people telling me this and didn't sound right. I've been to Indy to the one stop shop, the state police, going to scale house today to try to GET SOMEONE that knows what they're talking about lol... I've had a few differnt answers. and they were not to the question i had..They were saying what the truck and trailer GVWR is, is what you go by, say they truck say's it is capable of hualin 10k, trailer says 24k, right there add those up your at 34k wieght rating. so he cant even drag it around emty??

It's based on GVWR or GCWR(CGVWR). Not GVW. Many confuse GVW with GVWR.

You are correct that at the 34 GCWR you can't even drive it empty without a CDL.
