Yeah, that's the "pyro-cumulous" cloud. The fire is so intense that it is making its own weather system.

Trust me... that cloud was a lot bigger and scarier looking from here.

Ya. When I come down Willow Pass into Pittsburg I always look for the thunder cells on the crest. I saw that all by itself and thought holy...that's the fire! Generally it's just too hazy from the fires to make out anything, but it was so clear.

I'll tell you what was really ironic to me:

From Sacramento looking east into the sun, it was that big orange ball through all the smoke and haze and it reminded me of what the sun looks like in the middle east (Iraq, Saudi and etc) all the time.

Made the hairs on my neck stand up.

It doesn't appear far from the Rubicon either. It crossed Wentworth overnight but at least west of Ice House Rd and Gerle.

This is already nearly 4 times the size of the Cleveland Fire!

I was in Grass Valley today (for readers that don't know Grass Valley might as well be two states away if you're from back east) at the Draft Horse Classic and it's the lowest draw by far in many years because the smoke is so thick from the king fire. Very sad.

Saw the news last week when it hit 30,000 acres ..... now it's just wow.

Hope anyone near there is safe and doesn't have any fire related loses.

I learned to water ski on Scotts Flat Lake not far from Grass Valley.....I can't imagine how dry that lake must be now due to the drought.

I have not been by Scotts Flat for a while now. But if it is anything like the rest of the lakes, it's bad.

Fire is now about 83,000 acres and stretches from roughly Georgetown to Hell Hole Reservoir.

My father was the head mechanic working on the French Meadows Dam when Hell Hole Dam broke and filled French Meadows Lake prematurely...his tool box along with bull dozers and earth movers are all at the bottom of that lake.

I grew up stomping all over that area.....

I haven't been to Scotts in a few years myself so I can't comment on level, but on a side note, how in the heck do you get down to Lower Scotts? I've tried taking the dam road and another road but they have signs saying no access. Are they fake signs put up by homeowners?

I used to keep the kids busy by sending them to the dock with a jar of salmon eggs and a couple poles. They'd catch Bluegill for hours, allowing me to relax.

88,000+ acres now... and a red flag wind warning today.
At least it is up to 20% contained and rain in the forecast for Thursday.
