Hey all,

I recently bought a used '05 dually 11.5 rearend as I am converting my SRW to DRW,

When I cracked it open I noticed some corrosion on the ring gear and ABS/tone ring. It appears that one side had been submerged in water for some time.

Please see attached images.

I'm pretty certain I at least need to replace the ABS ring, (not entirely sure how it works) any input would be appreciated, but my biggest concern is the small amount of pitting on 2 of the ring teeth. This may not be a big deal at all as the pitting may not even be in the contact area.

Is it possible the small pits could be potential failure point on those ring teeth?

That's not good. It looks like someone got water in it and didn't change the fluid. I would replace the ring and pinion along with the ABS tone ring before major problems happen. It's toast.

IF it were my personal vehicle i would run it unless under consistant heavy loads. for a paying customer a different story. i have seen worse run for thousands of miles with no problems. before the flames begin 40 years of working on those things.

That is strange that's for sure. How could water get in the rear axle and how long did it sit for that to happen?

As was mentioned the ring gear is likely fine as the pitting is not in the contact areas.






The toothed sensor ring is for the speedometer and perhaps the ABS.
If the speedo was working fine and the ABS light wasn't on, I'd be be tempted to leave it.

Replacing the sensor ring isn't hard just time consuming.
Pull the axles, pull the carrier, tap off the old ring, heat the new ring in an oven, tap on the new ring, re-assemble...

The water came in from the vent tube. It got submerged under water at some time.
