Try backing the high idle screw out all the way and see if that helps the problem. If you are going to tow with the truck don't do anything to add fuel like a fuel pin or turning the full power screw with out a boost gauge and a pyrometer. The added fuel along with towing can cause engine failure so you need the gauges to monitor it.

Your sig says Washington - where in WA do you live? BTW I had the same setup when mine was new except for the rear end mine has 3.54s.Coming out of Jackson WY, towing 8000lbs I was fighting head winds in Idaho and had trouble keeping it at 60. I can run up Cabbage Hill outside of Pendelton OR with the same load in either 4th or 5th and easily do 60 with no trouble at all.

Sounds like a stock 1st gen with 4.10's and short tires.

I would get a fuel pin, drill some holes in the airbox and open the exhaust up.

and DEFINELY get a 3200rpm governor spring, it will make a world of difference with the 4.10 gears and stuff. And it makes the throttle feel nice.

Also what kinda exhaust does it have? The stock muffler chokes down to 2.5" inside...When we removed the one off the 93 the EGT's dropped like 150* and it spooled quicker.

I think your truck was meant to go 55 MPH all day long any time with any think behind it. And a top speed of 76 MPH with the 4:10s. Maybe you think your going backwards because all the new trucks hall tail and smoke past you. It must be nice.
What was your fuel mileage most likely good.14 or 16 MPG
What year was 55 MPH speed limit the norm.

This is about normal for the truck, especially with 4.10's. All these diesels , you had to push the pedal a little further down to get it to go, as compared to a gasser.

Not a concern IMO, hold er to the rug and go. My 90 with 4.10s I could get 82-85 mph and could tow anything I wanted at that speed too.....I miss that truck !

90 model ctd box stock, 1200 lb. trailer. dodge front wheel drive van on trailer, 5 per cent grade, on a bet hit the hill 55 mph, topped it a 65. 3.08 gear. i did this right after i bought the truck from a friend. so to me his truck just needs a little tweeking. i do have to watch egts now though

Gauges can help prevent a lot of guessing. A simple boost would let you know if the truck is indeed performing normal or has a leak somewhere.

The stock turbo housing doesn't help much.

My dad has a '93 W250 5-speed. All he's done is a 16cm housing and 4" exhaust. Its pulled many a truck and boat all over the place. Granted, we overfilled the Getrag and shifted down to 4th per the manual. Not been to the Rockies but has the Appalacians. Never embarassed us.

I'll pile on and say my truck in near stock form (still had the 21cm^2 housing but the PO had turned the full load up a touch) really left me disappointed. Really. With 4.10's it would be just that much worse. I'll never understand why people ordered that way unless you were using it in a logging camp. As everyone else has said, read the stickies, get gauges, and turn it up. You won't believe it's the same truck.

I've never towed heavy (no more than 7-8000lbs) and I've always used 5th, you just don't get anywhere if you stay in 4th.

His truck sounds like the bottom of the tune for stockers. I have 3.54 and 4sp auto and with a camper on the back pulling motorcycles I can leave it in 4th (OD) up almost any hills I encounter.

My truck was a dog until I set the timing and turned up the pump a little. With 410's and struggling up 3% grades in 5th (lower numerically) than my 4th (OD) it shoulds like your not making much boost/fuel...

Check to make sure your fuel guide pin is working.

I thought 5 speed trucks already came with the 3200 spring?
