If you don't have an Ipod, don't buy one as you don't need one. You can download your music to your computer then just load it onto a USB memory stick. These have become cheap and you could probably get every song you could want onto one. From here you can load them onto your onboard hard drive or/and keep them on the stick for back up or to just play from the stick.
How do you play music directly from the USB stick? I have copied music from a USB stick to the HDD, but didn't realize it could be played directly.

unplug the ipod and try again. mine does that intermittently. its my ipod. don't do it with my daughters ipod. also how old is your ipod
Got a brand new Nano and it does the same thing in my truck glove box, it works with the straight plug into the front but like he said above.

take the truck in when you have a chance and have them reflash the entertainment system. I have a new (less than a year old) nano and mine works fine. every once in a while i get a message but if I unplug it and plug back in, things are fine.
