Help with new turbo.

Thanks to obama, it looks like I will be getting a little more than I thought back on my taxes, so now i just need to dicide what to spend it on.

Im not a CTD expert by no means and dont understand the differences in turbos and sizes and extended tip BS, so ive come to you guys for a little help.

Both local shops that I buy my parts from tell me its time for a tubo but have different suggestions. one is the BD Super B special and the other is a II silver 64. I dont care about the price difference but just want the best performing turbo. when I buy the turbo im going to do a manifold at the same time. I do tow very little but heavy at times, but spool time is important to me.

Also what would be my next mod if i have a little extra cash after the turbo

I would do a HTT 62-71-14 and flux 2's, that is the setup I run and it makes great power and I have towed up to 22k GVW with my smarty on 5 and have no spool up or egt problems at all.

If money is no option go with a turbonetics ball bearing turbo(my favorite that ive owned) if your local shop sells em..just saying but i never owned or have been in a truck with the bd super b so i couldnt help you out on the that one, but my buddies truck is about the same setup as yours and he has the silver 64 stock man. and it spools pretty good and he has logged a heck of a bunch of miles on it 2. So its been pretty reliable for him. As for the extra cash part you should invest in a set of arp headstuds($450). If you have even more money after that then a set of ddp 90hp works awsome with with these common rails. The list can keep on going if you want lol.

Super B, is a great turbo, I have a 64 and though I have a 305/555 a tad different than the 325/625 model, its a tad laggy, and also live at 6,000ft above sea level. If you go with the Super B, you can use it for a twin set up in the future also. Garrets are awsome, they perform great and the sound is unbelieveable... Looks like your on the right path, and if you do injectors, get Don M's....

If the spool is important, you don't want the silver 64. Especially towing heavy. The B special is better for you, but I think you can do better still on the choice you make. What are your long term goals? Define that first, then go from there.

If spoolup is more important, i would opt for a 62 wheel or BB turbo. A 62/71 tows pretty good (I can vouch). The only 64s i would consider would be a 64/65-13 or 14 or the Super B Special, though the special will be the more laggy one of the bunch.

Just wanted to start of by saying this site is great and so are the people on it, lots of good info and help

as far a goals for the truck its will end up being a never endless build but i would like to make at least 600hp maby 700hp depending on the future, and I hope i can squez 500 or more with just the new turbo and another electroic if needed without haveing to go under major surgery like injectors.

towing isnt a big deal i can manage well without the truck in that field but I like a fast spool dont want to slip the cluth alot to build boost at the strip or on the sled

thinking about the ball bearing route but that seems to be a whole differnt ball game when i was just figuring out the difference in in the whole 64-14-71 jazz

so tomorrow il give tom a call at turboresource and get his imput

can anyone suggest a ball bearing turbo and maby shed some light on them

I just purchased a Garrett stage 2 from Tom at turboresource and it should be here hopefully friday or early next week. Hopefully I will like this turbo. Tom doesn't recommend a stage 3 unless you have injectors and a cam from what he told me. I think the garrett BB route is a great way to go, or at least I hope it will be. pm me if you want any more info like pricing or anything else.

Well today I went back to my local dealers and talked to them about the BB Turbos and one said he didnt have much experiance with them but a friend is testing turbonetics new duramax kit and is going through them quick, he dosent think the BB can hold up to high performance diesels yet, and the other said they put them on a few pulling trucks but the took em off because once the bearings got hot they wouldnt spool.....

sooo at that time I was definitly not going with the BB, untill I got ahold of Tom at Turboresource, He is very helpfull and seems to now his crap, hes got me buying a Garrett stage 2 and when I do my fuel and cam I can send it back to him and he can upgrade it to a custom stage 3 for a great price and good for over 600hp.

Just like stated above he would'nt recomend the stage 3 without Injectors and cam

can anyone imput on their BB turbo as for as problems with them, cuz I think I may be the only one in cental MO that wants one.

Do some searching on here and on some other sites. It seems to me that most people think the BB turbos are more durable than others. They also spool faster. I will find this out for sure in a couple of days when I get my stage 2. If I read correctly there is nw thrust bearing on the BB turbos making them more reliable. Tom is a good guy to deal with isn't he? If you get the stage 2 keep in touch so we can compare.

The BB turbos are great in their performance aspect. Some ppl are deterred by them because they actually have a different exhaust flange requiring an adapter to mount it. And if I'm not mistaken these are also water cooled so it adds a little more work to the install. Some ppl will vouch that it would be worth it. Me, being the shade tree mechanic I am, wanted a simpler install.
