Lift Pump
Lift Pump
Just how hard is it for the average back street mechanic to replace the lift pump on a 98.5 Cummins? Wondering, do you have to do the job from the top or bottom.
Looking at mine, it appears that the bottom, or underneath the truck is your only option. Starter Removal necessary?
Also, the drivers seat is starting to show ware, are there shops out there that repair and or replace these to OEM standards.

It takes about 1 hour to replace the stock LP. I worked from the top.
However, it may be a very good investment to spend more than that and install an upgraded fuel pump. Stock pumps don't seem to last and LP failure can cause VR44 to fail, meaning $$$ and aggravation.

I'll echo the previous comments. If the budget allows, upgrade the pump and skip the stocker.
FASS has a stock replacement pump with a 4 year warranty the DDRP.
Then you have the filterless pumps, the FASS HPFP and Raptor. Lifetime warranty
And then you have the filter models, Full FASS and AirDog. Lifetime warranty.

i replaced the stock lifty and ended up with a new vp44 less than a year later. not worth it. i used the ddrp (dodge direct replacement pump). you can get a fairly good deal online and you'll be way ahead by only spending a few dollars more. also, it bolts right in without all the hose mess/complication. i think mine was about $260 and napa wanted around $200 for the eom lifty. think about it...
oh, i did it from the top- about the same as the other post (1 hr). you'll be fine. there's lots of info and great guys on this site that'll help you out like they have me...
hope all goes well.
