Bleeding Brakes- Engine Running?

Getting ready to flush out the brake system and replace the old DOT 3 brake fluid with ATE SUPERBLUE BRAKE FLUID DOT 4

I was wondering if you have to run the motor while bleeding the system brake system using the manual technique (pumping the pedal and opening the bleeder valve and then pumping the pedal, etc.
Motor is so noisy, it would be nice not having to yell so loudly

Thanks,
Scott

I never start them.
Be careful with the pump the pedal method.
Often times the master cylinder piston is rusted in the area where it doesn't travel in normal braking.
If you push the pedal to the floor rust can tear up the master's seals = new master cylinder.
Put a block under the brake pedal to limit travel or better yet use a hand vacuum pump to bleed.

are dot3 and dot4 systems compatible?

either way I've never had the engine running to bleed the brakes
might be easier with the engine running..but harder to hear the helper.

Thanks for the input and tips fellas.
Ran the motor the last time that I bled the system, but will try without this time.

Dot 4 brake fluid is compatible with DOT 3 fluid.

DOT 5 fluid is not and if I remember correctly, DOT 5 is not compatible with ABS brakes calibrated to work with DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid.
