B1-Bomber Turbo "Barking" Noise
B1-Bomber Turbo "Barking" Noise
I just installed my B1-Bomber Turbo. It rocks.
I have noticed even more reverberation when I get the boost at 20+ and I let completely off the pedal. I think this is common to all turbos since I also experienced it with the stock setup. It is pretty loud with my current setup.
I don't know if this noise is a result of the turbo or the air intake or both. I also just installed the AFE Magnum Force Filter. I think the noise is the air hitting against the firewall but I am not sure since I am relatively ignorant on this stuff.
Do any of you have the same noise with your setups?
Is there a way to dampen this noise?
MD

Re:B1-Bomber Turbo Reverberation Noise
I am not worried about hurting the turbo. I just would like to lessen the noise if possible. My wife hates it.<br><br>I just ordered the ATP thermal wrap for my engine but I don't think it addresses this type of noise. <br><br>http://www.atpwrap.com/dodge_ram.htm<br><br>I would like to dampen the noise when I let off of the pedal if possible. I don't know what causes the noise though. I am not talking about turbo whine or anything like that...<br><br>MD

Maddog,<br>I've been driving a B1 for sometime and you will learn how to keep the "barking" to a minimum. The B1 really spools (rocks!) in the midrange and if you are heavily fueled you need to lift slowly, especially for the first 1/4 of pedal. It's not hard to do but takes a bit to learn. Glad you like the B1, mine been bulletproof. Larry

Yep, I have modified my driving habits to fit the barking and it works, somewhat.
What actually causes the barking to occur? That is what I am trying to get to so I can see if the barking can be dampened.

Stage 3's TST Comp and the B-1 Kwik and if I am under load on a hill...I will get a bark no matter what. Normal flat road driving I can elminate it<br>Of course I run on level 9 all the time. ;D<br>Fast spooling big turbo too.

Level 9 all the time
Jeez, you got bigger one's than I got

[/quote]
Level 9 in snow and usually in 6x6 or is that 4x4 or 4x6...well, all wheels taking power thru the snow banks anyway. ;D
Adding twins [kwikspool will be the lil guy] will help and then some showerheads for injectors...should have a nice balance of GET OUTTA MY WAY and See Ya!!!!!...for awhile.

Maddog:<br><br>When I had the B-1 on my 96' Dodge it did the same thing<br>you are describing! As Larry (Rogerrodbolt) said, it can<br>be "controlled" by your foot, but I agree that it can be<br>"annoying." That noise is mainly cause by a "reversal"<br>of the airflow. <br><br>As the other members said, the B-1 is a tough turbo! <br><br>--------<br>John_P

It's a pretty common occurance in free flowing intake systems in the gasser turbo world. I know my Buick Grand National used to make all kinds of racket when I'd get off the throttle while under boost.<br><br>The only REAL way to avoid this is to install a blow off valve on the intake side of the motor. I'm not sure if this is really feasible in the diesel world. Perhaps someone has tried it. One benefit of a blow off valve is you don't lose as much boost on a manual transmission truck as you do without one.<br><br>Either way, I'd say you've nothing to worry about from reading the reputation of the B1. I'm not sure how much of your driving habits you can change to prevent all of it as Scotty mentioned.
Somethings just can't be avoided.
