Hello Topper,

You are totally correct. An air filter will not stop water. I have an oiled K&N and ended up with bent rods in my gasser with the stock intake setup, just a filter change. If anyone thinks a cotton/gause filter that is oiled will stop water please think again. Cost me an engine.

Hey guys,
Well to answer some of your questions. The truck was running great. I was in a heck of a rain storm for about 45 mins. The traffic was very heavy and I was behind a couple of trucks that were sending gallons of spray my way. I guess we were traveling about 50 -60 miles per hr. (I know that this seems kinda fast for a rain storm but on the N.Y. Thruway it's not that fast.) Well when the rain started to let up and the truck ahead of me moved into the driving lane and I just started to speed up a bit when my truck started knocking big time!!!
I pushed in the clutch and got out of the line of traffic and shut down the engine. I started to check things and all seemed good so I tried to start the truck and it fired right up. It still knocked bad so I called the wrecker. When I got it down at the shop I talked over what happened to our diesel mechanics and they thought I may have dropped a valve again... When I pulled the intake I was pretty sure it was water related. Well nothing on top of the motor look hurt at all. Today I pulled the pan and pulled the pistons and rods and everything looked great. I sent my F1 injectors out to be tested (don't worry Don I told them just to test them if there is a problem they will be sent back to you for repair.) So I don't know if there was damage or not. It may have just been water in the cylinders causing a knock or the water hitting the end of an injector may have done some damage to the tip. It doesn't look like it but until their tested were just guessing. I'm sending the head out to be checked for cracks as well. I'll keep ya posted.
Oh and by the way THANKS for the kind words!!!
See ya,
Topper

Wouldnt water entering your air filter ruin your turbo? I would think something spinning that fast and met water it would hurt the vanes, it would take a few gallons to fill up your intercooler.

I'm not sure there was a problem at all.

The cowl induction of my super BHAF allows water to collect during a rainstorm, and when it ingests - the engine runs roughly and knocks for a few seconds 'til it clears.

As long as it doesn't hydraulic, I wouldn't be concerned about getting water into the air intake system - after all, H2O/CH3OH jets inject ~4-5 gpm...

If there is no water in the intake manifold you are ok....I did hydro lock my virtually new engine with a bad check valve on the water injection after I parked on a hill. Not good....wouldn't budge on the starter luckily...popped the injectors put the block heater on overnight and then hand turned the engine over...a spoon full came out of a couple of cylinders. I dumped the oil, put in new oil and ran the engine for a couple of hours and steam just poured out of the oil blow by vent. All has been great for 40kmiles so far. Engine runs smooth....KS

Nope completely different occurance...

Relay or something stuck at low RPM while towing, truck started spitting, pushed in the clutch and she locked... Was a lot of fun..

Hey guys,
Well to answer a couple more questions. It was definitely water related. The intercooler had about 2 quarts of water in it and the intake galley had some as well. If anyone that has an open air cleaner and thinks there ammuned to getting water in the engine imo your wrong. With the right conditions it can happen. What I should have done was to slow down a bit more and had made up a cheap tin guard. Anyway I checked all the pistons and rods and all looks good. I had the head sent out to be magnafluxed and check for flatness. So next week I'll re-hone the block and re assemble the engine. Hopefully I'll have her up and running by the end of next week. I bought another truck today and I'll be picking it up tomorrow so there's not a big rush to get it back together. I may just keep this truck for playin.
See ya,

Hey guys,
Just wanted to update ya. I got all the parts back and got the truck back together. It fired right up and sounded great... For about 3 seconds. Then she started to knock. Well long story short it all comes down to 1 injector is bad. So I guess I didn't get as much water in the engine as 1st thought. So now I overnighted the injector back to Don M for repair.
I'll keep ya posted,
Topper
