Smarty Jr EGT's
I have been talking to my buddies about the jr and the low egt's. They dont understand how it could have lower egt's than stock truck while increasing the power on the engine, and I dont know so I cant explain...So I have two questions
1) How does the Jr. keep the egt's low?
2) Can guys with Smarty Jr. and pyro tell me what their EGT's are compaired to stock and against other programmers or chips?

EGT's
1. Not sure why or how smarty does it in reguards to low egt's so can't help you there.
2. The highest I have hit with the JR so far is about 1150 @ WOT however, I have yet to tow with it and have not used any other tuners or boxes yet. Hope this helps.

The Smarty Jr drops the EGT's by advancing the timing. Below is a list of what advancing and retarding the timing does. As you can see retarded timing (stock) is better for emissions, but worse for mpgs, hp, and most of all EGT's.
In stock for I was able to get to about 1200* on a WOT onramp run, with the Jr I have only seen 950*. My dad also put a Jr in his 06 and towed 5K from Seattle to Eugene, Or yesterday. In stock form he wouldnt run cruise when towing because the EGT's would get higher than he liked... yesterday he didnt turn cruise off the entire drive and was very pleased.
The 40hp (economy) setting is just timing, so its really free hp. As there is no added fuel just the benefit of lower EGT's and more hp..
Both the 70 (towing) and 100 (performance) settings adjust timing and duration.
All 3 boost fool, which also helps EGT's and hp.
Engine parameter:
TIMING is:
RETARDED ( - ) ADVANCED ( + )
EXHAUST TEMP increases decreases
CYLINDER PRESSURE decreases increases
INTAKE MANIFOLD PRESSURE
(BELOW P-TORQUE) WASTEGATED increases decreases
BSFC (brake specific fuel consumption) increases decreases
NOX (oxides of nitrogen) decreases increases
HEAT REJECTION increases decreases
HYDROCARBONS (HC) increases decreases
BLACK SMOKE: 1000RPM increases decreases
BLACK SMOKE: PEAK TORQUE decreases increases
BLACK SMOKE: RATED increases decreases
WHITE SMOKE: < 1000RPM increases decreases
WHITE SMOKE: > 1000RPM increases decreases

On a mile long 7% grade, Stock SW hits 1050 to 1100. SW 1 (40hp) on the Smarty JR does it at 900. Same speed in 6th. 1500rpm.
Coming down this morning, I got the EGT down to 125F. Pumping +12F air through in 5th gear. 0 throttle.

1) How does the Jr. keep the egt's low?
-- Marco's magic....and dynamic timing (only programmers can do this)
2) Can guys with Smarty Jr. and pyro tell me what their EGT's are compaired to stock and against other programmers or chips?
--I have the smarty sr. on beta 4.4 (much more powerful than junior).....with truck stock....egt's can get to 1450* pretty easy....with smarty 4.4 on level 7....i have to try to get to 1400*....as in full throttle runs to at least 100 mph

Something I find curious. If SMARTY increases mileage, decreases EGT and makes more HP, why doesn't Dodge use that programming? I'm not going to believe that they don't have the same technical capabilities as Marco, and a lot more resources.
Like said prior, better emissions. In a world that is so worked up over temps rising on the earth like they did few years ago before the last big ice age. I would say they cant from the government. My wonder is, isnt to much timing and effiency to bad. Like heat soaking the pistions etc. Remember few months ago when the rash of melting pistions and rings were goin on from little to much timing on this forum?

The main reason the '05s are somewhat retarded and the '06s seem to be even more retarded is to keep NOx down. It's an emissions thing. Dodge can't do it due to the EPA.
Here's a helpful link from the EPA about NOx.

To be perfectly honest I would have been happy with a 20hp increase with these EGT's.
Emissions... plain and simple... its an EPA thing not a Cummins thing. The newer engines have the most retarded (no punn) timing of any Cummins in the Dodge.
Yes, but were no where near that level on the Smarty Jr... 40hp really isn't that much just by timing, considering how retarded it was.

the fact is:the automobile manufacturers, epa, big bankers, and the oil companys are in bed together

advancing timing does not hurt emissions, but rather helps it.why would they want you to get better mpg when they make you buy more fuel.how can you get better mpg if emissions are lower?that's just thier silly excuse for the public
it's all about $$$.

Thanks for the responses. I will be getting the JR tomarrow. I think im getting sick, might have to call into work tomarrow....
Can you say 6.7... much better emissions than a 5.9 and much worse mileage... I agree that less fuel burnt is better... but gallon for gallon a 6.7 has less emmisions... same thing with advancing the timing, thats not a EPA chart, thats a cummins chart. You create more NOX with advanced timing, thus worse emissions... but more power and better economy...
