Muffler Advice?
Muffler Advice?
I am looking into getting an aftermarket muffler and wanting something with a deep throaty sound with very little or no drone. A loud raspy sound is what I want to stay away from. Any input would be appreciated.
I was in your shoes not long ago and i went with a Magnaflow, sounds good no loud drone. You could also look into MBRP or a Donaldson. I here that the Donaldson is more quiet than the above i mentioned, until you stand on it. I would definetly put something on there, if you want to have a conversation with someone while driving.
Got my flamesuit ready, but i was told to have something on there b/c the cummins has alot of back pressure. Running with no muffler you stand a chance of burning a valve among other things. Some folks are not as sensitive to drone as others.
I have not had a muffler in a lot of miles, I think around 50,000? No valve problems here, but I also left the cat on. I'm not sure how you loose back pressure when there's a turbo inline though. You can't even tell the muffler is gone until you give it some go pedal - from inside the truck anyway. Outside it's low, and loud when you give it some fuel to burn.

The less you have the better off you are with a turbo. I have the Donaldson one for semi's, just straight through 4" and 51" long and it is as quiet as stock. I forgot the part number, but it's too quiet for you anyway.

Got my 40" Nelson from the local Cummins storefor $67.
4" straight through, no drone, only slightly louder than stock at an idle, nice when you punch it.
Pics and part number in my gallery..

5" in and out 51" long donaldson. You will need 4-5 reducers. Part# is M090535. Can also get this at ryderfleetproducts.com. This is the most free flowing muffler donaldson makes. I have the 40" donaldson on my 90. It sounds very good, and is the second highest flowing. Part# is M085171.. Hope this helps..Justin
Well.....I thought I wanted that. I bought a used 5" magna flow exhaust with the big Donaldson....great when idle or even just cruising...put the 5er on and forget it. 1450 rpm is plain awful. I like it except when I pull....looking at the Hushpower to see how they do.
I just deleted the muffler and left the cat in place. It's a little louder in the cab but not much. It sounds good on the outside. I get a lot of compliments on the way it sounds and it is more responsive as well.
