Tough impeller change
Tough impeller change
In preparation for an impending stage IV install, I disassembled an old turbo I had floating around to see if there were any bug-a-boos. Everything came apart as expected except that after removing the left hand thread nut on the impeller, the pin wheel was really stuck to the shaft. After trying an assortment of non-destructive methods (PB blaster, heat etc.) I just drove the shaft out with a soft drift and a small hammer. This, of course, broke the wear plate under the impeller. No biggy, plate was worn out anyway. However, I don't want to damage the turbo currently on the truck, so my question is this: Is it normal for the pin wheel to be difficult to remove or was this an exception, and if the good one is sticky, what is a good way to remove it without damage?
Thanks,
Brian
