S&B intake

Thinking about doing some mods to my truck and have been tossing around the Smarty S67, Edge Insight, or Bullydog Watchdog, and a cold air intake. The S&B seems like a good unit. Read some of their testimonials from folks on their website. People seem to like it, except maybe more turbo noise. I kinda like the quiet of the truck. A little would be ok, but not noisy. No thanks.
Any people got one on their 6.7's, and if do, what do you think?

Just bought the S&B and love it. Wish it had more turbo noise. I have to turn down the radio to really hear it.

We just put one on an 03 5.9L and it is a very nice kit. It was extremely simple to install and fits like a glove. As far as turbo noise goes, I was actually very disappointed in the lack of turbo noise. It makes my AEM on my 06 sound obnoxiously loud. After seeing the S&B on the 03, we decided to go with that for my father's 08.

Are you seeing any improvements in power and fuel economy? I'm hoping to be able to compliment the Smarty w/ a new filter.
WK4ALVN, what rig did you put it on?

I installed all mods in my sig at the same time. Runs much better! I have more torque than stock TQ can take. 1-3 gear it holds 3kRPM's in 4th it locks the TQ, drops to 2k RPM's and REALLY starts pulling!

wk4alvn, your going to need a torque soon. Thats a huge drop in RPM when it locks up.

What is a XRT, and a 5" TBE? Sorry for the stupid question, but I couldn't find it on their website.

The XRT is a programmer made by H & S performance and the 5" TBE is a complete exhaust system......turbo back exhaust....here is a link of a company selling a kit for the 2 items

I'm wondering how much of a difference over stock the cold air system makes. Anyone have any links or experience with hp and torque #'s over stock with the S&B cold air for the 6.7?

s&b

Installed the S&B on my 08 ,I was dissappointed to find the bottom open which allows under hood air to enter. So I closed the bottom with a HomeDepot 3"roof stack gasket ,then a piece of 3" tubing down to the under side of the truck. There is better throttle response and you can hear the turbo a little bit.

One thing to consider with the S&B (or any aftermarket CAI) if you live in a dusty environment is that a CAI may flow MORE air than the OEM setup but I have yet to find one that flows CLEANER air. I give credit to S&B for putting their flow and filtration data up for the customer to see but this data shows the S&B doesn't filter near the same levels as the OEM setup. For this reason, I have left the OEM setup on my truck. Sure, i'd like to hear the turbo whistle a bit more and a smoother throttle response is always nice but not at the expense of slagging a turbo due to contaminants getting through (I live in a VERY dusty environment).

That being said, i also have trouble believing a CAI can gain much in the way of power and efficiency on these trucks. The OEM system is actually a pretty well designed system and cold air intake really doesn't matter much on a turbocharged, intercooled engine. I can see 21 hand calculated MPG out of my '08 on 35" tires on the freeway with a 5" TBE, EGR delete, and Smarty on SW3. I doubt a CAI would improve on that much.

However, there are some areas of the intake system that I think CAN be improved upon to yield better efficiency (both in relation to power and fuel economy) and that is on the post-intercooler side. A 3.5" boost tube, aftermarket airhorn, and grid heater delete should allow a MUCH larger volume of air to enter the engine with much less turbulence which should yield a pretty significant gain. I think these three little upgrades will show a larger benefit to efficiency than a CAI. Just my opinion, however. I have no current scientific data to support my hypothesis.

I spoke with a dealer for the S&B cai, and he said that unless I was willing to do the exhaust mods, a cai wouldn't gain enough, if anything, to defray the cost. I appreciated his honesty. I think the best bang for the buck is going to be the S67 programmer. I'll be saving for that one for a while.

Make sure the sensor plug is plugged in all the way. A bad connection there can cause a CEL.

I have the S&B and love it. Been operating mills and equipment for to many years to hear the turbo. I really like the 8 layers of protection that it offers over the AFE PG7. Had one on a 04 6.0. Have nothing bad to say about AFE but the 250 price tag of the S&B over the 400 some for the AFE is hard to argue. The thing about CIA's is if a person dosn't put the hole pacage together then one piece of the puzzle dosn't make it a picture.
