Puff of white smoke

Hello All,

I have searched on Smoke, white, puff....it turns up so many results I can't quite find a answer to my question.

My brother has a 2001 24 valve. 100% stock. It lost a lot of power a few months back. Come to find out it was a boot on the intercooler. Fixed the low power and black smoke problem. Now, when he turns off the truck and turns it back on, cold or after running for a while. it has a huge white smoke cloud. I know that white smoke is typicly unburned fuel in the exhaust. I am not sure if is this conditon. Because it happens only when accelerating out of 1st about 5 minutes after warm or cold start. Any ideas?

Thanks,
y22man

depending on temperature, white smoke could either be the water that is created with combustion or the dreaded vp44. When mine was dying i would get white smoke at start up, and anytime i mashed the throttle (before mods).

I would check for codes.... Key on/off/on/off/on ad watch the Odometer.

If there is no codes I wouldn't worry about it... If the dreaded P0216 pop's up you know its the VP44 is failing.

Ok thanks for the replies.

This is in no way normal. The white cloud is like a Spy Hunter Smoke screen. And only happens when starting from a stop and inbetween shifts. Only does this with in a minute or two of startup. Again does not mater warm start or cold. Altho the inbetween shifts is a much smaller amount of white exhaust. Outside temp. is 45-70*.

Well there is two place that oil might be entering the system and being burnt.

* Turbo Seals / Bearings (Might check for movement)
* Piston Rings (Wearing)

We've got a Chevy Diesel Fire Truck that is the same way. Start it up and it will fog the whole area with white smoke. We are almost total sure its a bad piston in there. But after you let it warm up a bit the smoke goes away completely.
