A guy at home with a transmision shop told me he got pieces made at a machine sop and welded em on to keep it from moving. Dont know mutch about what he told me.

I've studied Quad 4X4's website extensively, and talked to them several times on the phone, so that is what my experience is based on. My truck was too old with too many miles on it to justify more than having the replacement aftermarket fifth gear fix, which has a new type of retaining system. If you weld it, and it breaks, it will likely ruin the rest of the gears while the pieces go through it. If money is no object, and you want durability, then spring for their $4K tranny, which is a NEW tranny that they have updated with the Torque King shaft and gear...IMHO.

The best fix, I believe is the fully splined shaft:

Yukon what did you end up doing to your transmission ZIP

I found a guy in South Carolina that does nothing but gear work, and had him go through it. The fakalou needle bearing that had been replaced with the clutch failed after 12K miles, and ruined the bearing surface of the input shaft. So along with replacing that, he replaced the output shaft with an "aftermarket" shaft, which has a fully splined support for the gear, as Dr. Evil mentioned. I really had to weigh affordability with durability here, since I was 5,000 miles from home with my trailer; I would have much rather had Quad's Torque King, but I think I know how to drive this thing, and never lug it in 5th. As soon as I can shift down, I do so. He also replaced all the bearings, seals, synchros, etc. Hope that helps!

I believe the best fix is swapping to the 5600. My 5th gear failed @ 120k and I did the swap and never looked back.

That's interesting...I've never researched that out, but if this tranny fails again, perhaps I will, since it is possible to do a swap like that. Thanks for the info!
