Dropping cummins in gas truck.

Im taking a 96 12V cummins and dropping it into a 90 250 ram gas truck. What all do i need to change as far as wiring and stuff? thanks Wes

I'm not 100%, but isnt the 96' inj pump and a couple other things electronic controlled? If so you will need the computer and most of the wire harness. Also you will likely need stiffer springs up front.

You could go with an all mechanical VE and not use any electronics, thats probibly the easiest way to go. I am thinking about putting my trucks drive train in a 90-97 chevy half ton. There really quiet inside and I think it would get really good milage. I'm not big into towing heavy loads anyway, and my poor old dodge is falling apart around the drive line. I'd love to drive this same cummins motor to over 1,000,000 miles in as many old trucks as it takes.

I would think first step would to ensure the frame can handle it. Not just the weight, but the torque. I have heard of folks trying the cummins in 1/2 ton chevys, only to have the frame twisted like a pretzel. I would think a 3/4 ton truck would be a min and might still have to do some strenghten. I have a 92 chevy 3/4 ton with the 6.5 and I would have to do a 3 inch body lift and run electric fans in order for a cummins to fit.

The truck im dropping it in is a 3/4 ton, i was just wondering about the wiring.

I installed a 90 5.9 CTD in a 92 W350 that was originally gas powered.
I ended up swapping out EVERY bit of wiring from stem to stern.
I wanted everthing to look factory, not to mention the fact that it will be easier to troubleshoot this way.

you will be alright on everything .. Well you can hook your fuel shut off to the dist. power wire for the hold in , run a wire from the starter to the pull in so when you crank it will pull it in. Next you use all your sending units from your gas engine so your gauges will read (I put mechanical gauges in mine ). I use a heavy duty push button starter to control the heat grid ..hold it down count and release super easy , or you can make a timmer to hook up to the intake temp. sensor and cycle it that way .I've put the 12v and 24v in some diffrent applications( Vans , diffrent pick-ups , straight trucks , semi , dump truck ...you name it ) If I can help just ask . I looked into tranplanting a 91 CTD into a '87 W150, as far as I can tell the frame size was the same on these years 3/4 and 1/2 ton Dodge's.

I would box the front section of the frame in before you put your engine in.

As for the wiring, water temp, oil pressure, shutdown selinoid, alternator. I think that would be the bare necessities. Alternator needs a regulator (regulator is in the PCM after 91 or 92), shutdown selinoid needs power when the key is on.

What trans are you hooking this engine up to?

Going to use a transmisson and tcase from a 92 cummins. I was wondering about the intake heater and the alternator and solenoid. As for the alternator, could i use the same regulator from the gas motor for the diesel motor?

Regulator is the same, the injector pump just has the shutdown solenoid, and I know it needs alot of power to pull on, then it switches over to just a hold power which would be minimal. I don't know the exact wiring though sorry.
