Duramax Looks Impressive...

But then again, I haven't done any in-depth lookin' around in hopes that someone here has the inside scoop...

What's the story with the Duramax trucks? I've heard they've had some injector problems (fixed with "new" Duramax...akin to lift-pumps being fixed on new ISB's), but besides that, they seem very stout and are putting down some very impressive power figures.

How are these guys putting down the big power numbers? What are they doing to their trucks/engines?

Well, you really need to be on their site, but since you are here---
It appears that they are having quite a time with injectors, some trucks sit for WEEKS waiting.
The newer d-max has issues with mileage being down compared to the early truck.
JD Powers report says the Allison has a very high repair incident. Much higher than Ford or Dodge.
Also the injector issue, Dealers are teasting the fuel in the tank with a ???? test-no-one knows what it tests- and says the fuel is junk. This voids the warantee.
No truck is perfect.
Buyer beware.

I don't know of any technical forums for the Duramax, but from what I know the modifications that they take are rather different from the Cummins. To my knowledge, the Duramax is more of a tuner moter, and a computer alone can get tons of power out of them, if not for very long periods. I don't know of anybody that makes injectors for them, and I think they got some kind of high-technical water cooled turbo, making modifications for them quite different than on the Duramax. It's a lot like comparing those old rice rockets with musclecars. Picture Jackie Chan's car in Canonball Run. That's the Duramax...

I know there fast stock but the new Powerstroke 6.0s are faster.I love dodges and they pull but the dodge can't keep up with a Durmax (unloaded) or the 6.0.

My cuz just got a in 04 Ford auto (it has a auto temp gauage factory and the 05s you can get with boost and EGT) and we raced a Durmax with a Edge Box.I know the dude with the durmax and we could beat him with the edge on 1,2, and 3 through a 1/4 mile but after that he could smoke us pretty good but the 6.0 was bone stock with 1,000 miles on it.

Is this true? This is the first I've heard of it. Didn't think anyone was doing a factory EGT and boost gauge setup.

All i hear (performace wise) is good from a dmax. But i test drove a 01 GMC Dmax and all i can say is edit: we don't use explitives or abbreviations . I could lay that pedal to the floor and a bicycle could pass me. I mean i dont know if it had good or bad power but its like they programmed it to not perform from the factory. I could power brake and what not. but man a 0-60 would just suck monkey

My boss has a 2003 Dmax and has had clutch/transmission problems. The dealer actually put a transmission cooler on his 6 speed "hoping" that would fix it? They have a new flywheel design they are put on when he brought it back in because the cooler didn't work. They also have injector trouble. To find out about them go to the diesel page. com let them tell you about it.

I'll stick with my old technology, in line 6 Cum-a-Part, with the shody Dodge wrapper.:D

The other guys may be faster stock, or on drugs. Just remember, 95% of Fords are still on the road, the other 5% made it home. The general is not sounding any better.

I see allot of 6.0's on the hook or waiting for the hook. I hear about the Duramax. I have seen under the hoods of both.:o I can SEE my diesel, that is rather comforting to me.

The debate is still out if the new designed LLY Duramax fixed the injector issue. Some LLY Duramax owners have already had to replace injectors (but also some of our 600 owners too). What I don't like about the LLY is the added complexity with the variable vane turbo and the EGR system. Seems to be a big issue with the Ford 6.0 diesel also. Some LLY owners are also having issues with over heating and the lack of power compared to the earlier LB7 Duramax.

guys i have yet to have a show room diesel pu to pass my 90ctd . havent run a 6.0 yet jury is out on that one. i have only run 4 d-maxs. they were stock and were trying. i know when they add a box i am out of it. my truck has stock injectors and that wimpy 1st gen pump. last d-max i ran was at dragstrip. ctd was .8 sec quicker than the chevy. :)

A freind of mine has an 02 Dmax, and will flat out run circles around mine(expected) empty and loaded, but it will also outpull the newer Dmax as well. My dad also has an 02 Dmax, and has not had any trouble w/the injectors. They both have the allison tranny, and have had no problems w/it. We all have travel trailers, I wish I had an allison behind my cummins, but I wanted reliabilty from a tranny, and went w/the 6 speed. If you haven't towed with the allison, you don't know what your missing, it is unbeleiveable, how it controls the load w/the motor, just like a manual, but no shifting. Maybe they both got lucky, and got good motors and trannys.

The company I work for currently has 4 of Dmax's. Tons of power and extremely quick - but the mud/dirt have trashed the rear disk brakes now three times on the feed truck. Rotors and brakes - $1500.00 - no warranty. Four wheel disk brakes aren't what they're cracked up to be.

one of my friends has a duramax and the other a new ford 6.0, they both smoke me.

tenbrooks Oct 21, 2004 08:27 PM

my bro-in-law bought an new 04 ford 6.0, had it 2 weeks and the transmission came apart. looks like everyone is having problems with their trannys. He said he wanted to pull me , I said sure I'll pull your new tranny apart too. I aint seen hide nor hair of since he got the truck back from the dealer.[laugh] :D

I know people that have had both brand new Duramax's and 6.0's and both have been in the shop multiple times for transmission problems. Both of them were automatics as well. One guy sold his new Duramax for a new cummins [laugh] . I dont know about the Dmax's and 6.0's bein faster....the ford doesnt seem like it has any power at all in low rpm's and the chevy feels like it has little top end. I've test driven many 6.0's and duramax's and although the chevy has a really favorable interior the new Cummins still blows them all away...
