Getting injectors, help me out please.

I am probably getting six 50 hp injectors for the price of two (Scheid or DDP; thoughts welcome) and am going to be towing a 10'000 lb-ish boat through the Rockies this summer. My truck has to tow this weight somewhat regularly. From reading these threads I see that a boost fooler, Smarty, and exhaust are all ways to cool EGTs.
I'd like to do a Smarty Jr. sometime in the future but don't really want to spend the money right now. If it can do the same thing as a boost fooler I'd consider it.
Does the boost fooler help spool up or just add a few psi at the top end? I won't be doing the hammer-down-up-a-hill thing much if at all so just gaining peak boost wouldn't be all that helpful.
I want to replace my muffler with an Aeroturbine 4040XL and maybe delete the cat at some point but will this help all that much for towing temps?

I want to do something but can't decide what. Please point out anything I'm missing and thanks for reading.

Anything you do to open the exhaust will help to lower your egt's. Without significant fueling upgrades it is doubtful that you will notice the effects of the new sticks. However, a programmer of sorts and an un-obstructed air intake will help your situation as well. If you want the full tilt boogie.....go with injectors, turbo, and programmer, but beware my friend, that slope quickly becomes very slippery very quickly!!!!!!!

Well I ordered an MBRP muffler because I couldn't find someone who both had the Aeroturbine and was willing to ship it to me here in the subarctic. A little concerned about how loud its going to be, inside and out...

With "just" 50hp injectors, the stock fuel system is up to the task. No extra money needed there. The boost fooler just keeps your ecm from setting a code for too high a boost by "fooling" the ecm that it is seeing lower boost than actual. It does not add power and only helps at the very top end. The smarty jr boost fools already, so no need to buy both. If towing through the rockies, just keep everything tuned down. You'll be able to watch the egt gauge and adjust accordingly.

Your turbo is better than what was on my 03 but a bigger one would be good, some day. Does someone have a sale on injectors or nozzles? Craig

No, my Dad needs 4 new ones so I'm giving him mine, then I pay the difference on the new ones. Pretty good deal, I think.

They're in the mail!

FINALLY found a place (Diesel power Products) that had common rail injectors in stock and not on "it could be a month" backorder. Anyway, ordered their last set of Industrial Injection's Dragon Fly 60 hp sticks.
From what I've read, these will probably wake up the bottom end a bit and add some heat. I have an MBRP muffler also in the mail but that's it for planned mods. How much added heat and smoke can I expect?
I plugged in a used Edge box (not sure what it is) for a little while but didn't really like the 100 degrees of added EGTs so I'm gonna leave that out I think.

I tow 16,000 pounds from Florida to Newfoundland to Alaska and Mexico and all points in between. I am pure stock and never found the need for increased power. The only thing I did to lower EGT's was change out the air filter to a higher flow - - dropped the EGT's towing about 150 or so at the top end and decreased accelleration time at 55 to 70 about 4 seconds. I guess I have no need to be the first to the top of the hill pulling that much weight so I did not want to push the limits of other parts. Durability was more important than going faster.

If you look at my signature I am running roughly the same set-up your talking about. I tow a 35' 10,000lb TT and find the EGT's stay in check MOST of the time, as long as I pay attention. These trucks run hot stock, so the added fuel only increases that. I am debating about some ways to cool EGT's myself, and am thinking about a water meth system as I know I am already at the limits of what the stock fuel system can handle. This is a daily driver and tow vehicle for me, and since this is my 3rd Cummins, I am WELL aware of the bombing bug, so I am trying to keep it simple[dummy][duhhh]

Ok 89dieselkong you aren't running any kind of electronic tuning is that correct?
i'm wondering if a Smarty Jr. on SW1 would actually cool EGTs...

075point9, too bad you couldn't have waited a bit. My exhaust is no cat with the 4040xl (bought it here in Edmonton). I've got a Magniflow system being coated and when that's done, I'll be ditching my aeroturbine!

Well quote me a price (on just the muffler) and we'll talk! Wouldn't be anything wrong with adding it to my MBRP if I find it too loud, right?

YES they will def reduce your egts alot. i was afraid of the extra hp hurting my auto while towing but i found out that it seems to be better with the sw1 on cause the temps are like 1250 1290 max towing up mt vs when its stock they sit at 1350 to 1450 no matter what

I'd probably sell the muffler for $100. Not sure what I paid for it to tell you the truth. Truck sounds pretty cool though.

I'll let you know when it comes off.

89dieselkong Apr 3, 2011 09:33 PM

You are correct that is without tuning. I have been debating about a Smarty JR to help cool EGT's, but I am worried that my stock fuel system won't keep up with that and the injectors. I need a few more trips towing to really see where I am at EGT-wise.
