2004.5 Stalled and cut off
2004.5 quad cab 6spd 4x4 63000 miles. On way home going 55 mph 2 miles from home the truck started to shudder and lost power. I pushed the clutch in and tried to rev the engine. Truck would not rev so I pushed the clutch in and tried to coast about 1/2 mile to my cousins soybean field. Truck cut off while coasting but I did make it. No engine lights are on. I checked the fuel separator. When I open it it made a sucking sound and no fuel or water came out. I tried to start again and truck started but cut off after 3 seconds. I waited about 5 min and tried again. Truck ran about 5 seconds and again cut off. Truck is stock. No gauges. What can I check to get my truck running again?

My guess would be fuel pump. Is it still the filter mounted one on the 04.5's? If so they were notorious for failure. Should be covered under 7/70 warranty ($100 deductible?) and will be fixed with the in-tank replacement. If stock should be very adequate for normal usage. My 04/5 when changed gave me an additional 60K before I traded the truck for my 07.

Yes it is the filter mounted one. I saw another site that said to turn the truck to crank it but not to start it and leave the ignition on and open up the water separator. Fuel should pump out. I get a very small dribble and then nothing. Something is clicking in the engine compartment but no fuel is pumping.
I replaced the fuel filter with the last oil change in the spring. Should I try replacing the fuel filter with a new one now? I have one in stock. Does the 7/70 warranty cover the fuel pump? |
Towed and took to Dealer. They said it is the LP and is not covered under warranty. They want $1000.00 to fix it. Is this covered or not? Can anyone give me specifics if it is. Thanks

This item is under the 7/70 warranty from Dodge and if you really want to argue it it should also be under the 100K Cummings warranty that Dodge administers. I have heard of a few others that Dodge claims are not covered by warranty so don't know if they ghave had a change of plan or what but in my mind it isd part of the running gear, if it won't start it won't run. Call the customer service number and see what you can find out and hopefully someone on here has dealt with this issue prior. Mine was over 5 years ago and truck was at 23K miles when it failed.

dealing this exact issue not covered computer says so call chrysler what crap we know its covered under 100k engine warranty the service people know it but pc says different bs

its always been covered under the fuel sytem of the motor

I found another web page where someone mention they had theirs done under either the 7/70 warranty or the 100000 mile engine warranty. I called that dealer and spoke to the service manger. He believed it was covered but when I pressed him for the exact plan he had to look it up. He couldn't find it and said they must have changed their policy because he remembers covering a few last year. I think I'm going to order the original replacement from Geno's and change the pump in the dealers lot. It will save me the tow bill home and then in 2 years I'll order an Air Dog.

The lift pump is covered for 5 years or 100k under the Cummins emission warranty but, they have to enter it just right in the computer or it won't fly with Dodge. Just for your info, the relocation kit should be just a touch under $400 for the parts.

Ok I'll give the 800 number a call in the morning and if I do not get it taken care of I'll order the same type pump that I have now along with a pressure gauge. I have little faith that this will be covered. Also my warranty book says the original owner is covered for 7 years or 100000 miles under the Cummins Diesel Engine Warranty. I have owned this truck for over 5 years. The warranty book mentions specific parts that are covered but does not mention the fuel lift pump. It does mention the fuel injection pump and injectors. It also mentions gaskets and seals for listed components. I would like the lift pump to be covered but I can not find any specific document to show the dealer that it is a warranty item.

Is this a common problem with the 04.5's? Mine is doing the same thing. I've read on different forums and found the same problem with multiple 04.5 owners. Mine has 126K miles so it's beyond the warranty. When mine stutters I get no black smoke, the check engine light has yet to come on and doesn't throw a code. I don't know if it's the fuel pump, lift pump or something electical like a bad ground. I'm lost!

That's hard to say but when the lift pump goes, it usually just goes. It's rare to hear someone report the stock lift pump acting erratically before it fails.:cool:

If they won't cover it, install a raptor 100 kit or just buy a replacement from geno's. I think if you are beyond 5 years or 100k, they won't cover it under the cummins warranty. My OEM lift pump died at 81,900. I paid $100 to have the in-tank lift pump conversion done but my truck was under 100k and 5 years from the in-service date. If I could do it all over again, I would have paid for a raptor or fass before the OEM pump left us stranded several hours from home with the camper in tow. Between campground fees and the towing bill, it would have been cheaper to pay for an after market lift pump kit before the stocker died.

Dodge agreed to pay for the part if I paid $550.00 for the labor. I had already ordered the part from geno's. ($199 w/ shipping)I went to the dealer and replaced the pump in about 20min. I was able to get to the pump from the bottom. I then went to the service department to decline their offer and pay the $100 for their diagnostics. I told them I would get the truck off their property. They sent a technician to get my keys and he proceeded to go and get my truck and drove it to the service department for me. No one at the dealer thought it was strange that a truck with a faulty fuel pump started right up. Thanks for all the input here at this site. My back up car had the same thing happen to me 2 days after this while going to work. Cut off and dead fuel pump. What luck.
