how many miles?
I did a search o this but came up with nothing on engine.
I am wondering how many miles people are getting out of these engines before rebuilds? I am looking at a 99 2500 with 209,000 highway miles on the clock. Not a 53 block. The tranny has been gone through and a after market torque converter was installed. not sure what else was done. The guy installed a intank fuel pump. Just wondering if I could see getting another 200,000 out of the engine before a teardown. Any help would be great. Ken |
Don't worry about the miles. I have almost 400K on a 98.5 with no mechanical problems. These engines are hard to kill. Mine is tagged for 33,000 pounds and has pulled this and more on several occasions. One that isn't worked so hard would probably go a million miles without any problems. I've only replaced the VP-44 once and several lift pumps. 200K is only broken in.

I think for a rebuild on our engines is an "as needed" thing. Set the valves every 100,000, regular oil changes, routine maintenace, etc, will keep these engines happy and running a long time before anything major (like a full rebuild) becomes required.

You will have to replace the injection pump on that motor if you decide to keep it for another 200k. That's about it.

Thanks for all of the help.
Hopefully I can pick this rig up by next weekend. Ken |
Kennys. If we could all get 200k per vp, we would all be happy campers. what's your secret?

All I have done is add Marvel Mystery Oil about every other fillup. Original pump ran 274,003 miles. It did die in a good place, in the yard. It could have happened several hundred miles from home.
