Ratteling Getrag
 

Why does my Getgag rattle when i am in neutral? when i depress the clutch, I get to hear the sweet sound of the cummins, but when sitting in neutral the trans rattles//// why??
I have a 84 300GD which does the same thing
The dodge has about 250k miles, leaks nothing, and will shift smoothly up or down with no issues at all!!!!
trans filled with ATF //5 sp
truck is a 1 ton
and after being on this site for the past couple of weeks, I am now dreaming of finding a 4 wd 1 ton daully club cab!!!!!!

I am ordering a new exhaust this week!

Will the rattle go away if you raise the RPM a little? That's gear rattle then, nothing to worry about. If you fill the trans with 5W-30 synthetic it should quiet down some, ATF is really thin stuff.

If it quiets down with minor pressure on the clutch i would suspect the t/o bearing in the clutch. Good luck

Let me know when u fine a getrag with 250.000 on it that dose'nt rattle. New oil and a quart over full should help matters.

My 92' has the original clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and getrag, never been out of the truck. Still shifts good, it does rattle some though!

Oh sorry, I was braggin on my 92' but forgot to tell the miles! The odometer quit at 260,000 a year ago. I'd say she's almost to 300,000 now. The clutch is getting awful jerky starting a heavy load though, doesn't slip, just jerky. I predict I will pull it all out and put in a new clutch and freshen up the getrag before 2006 is over.

Noise does not quiet when slight pressure on pedal, only when depressed enough to stop the main shaft from spinning,
I just bought this truck from a guy who used it for his house building business, and to tow his horse trailer, the speedo stopped working 8 years ago at 207 k miles, he guesses that the truck has about 250k+ miles, It is the origional clutch, and everything works now, even the ac, I just gave it a little R12, and works great!!!
I will change the fluid to something a little heavier than the ATF , when i install my new 4" exhaust!
I really dont mind the noise from the getrag, all is well with the box, But i like how quiet the cummins is without the rattle in the foreground!

I had that happen...in neutral it was rattling and there was a knocking sound coming from inside the tranny. When I depressed the clutch it went away. Had it looked at, and the throw out bearing was bad, and on top of that, even though it shifted fine and ran ok, the clutch was just about disintegrated. Might be worth looking at...cost me $1800 for a tranny rebuild, maybe if I caught it sooner [dummy]

Time to start saving up enough money for a SouthBend Clutch. You're throwout bearing is shot. A shot t/o bearing will ruin your transmission. Might as well put a new clutch in there while you have the trans down. New flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing comes in the kit from South Bend. www.southbendclutch.com

OK, enlighten me. How can a bad throwout bearing harm the transmission? From all of the trannies I've seen the throwout rides on a sleeve that covers the input shaft. That sleeve is the only part of the tranny that touches the bearing.

All i know is that the oil change w/one extra q of oil helped the noise but it didn't go a way until i rebuilt my t-case and desided that i migth as well put a clutch in it. While i was in there removing the tranny and clutch i noticed the clutch disk was like new but the throw out bearing was ruff and the pilot bearing was wasted.
When i went to put the new pilot bearing(bushing) it slid in with only finger pressure so i removed and reinstalled it with hi temp lock tight. The old one fell out when the tranny was removed.
The gear rattle is gone now, even when dead cold [guitar]
By the way, the input shaft bearing(in the tranny) was tight but, i do beleve that a bad pilot bearing can shorten the the input shaft bearing life!

Ok I just dug through all my good books to find where I read about the t/o bearing damaging the trans. I was wrong it's the pilot bushing/bearing that can damage the transmission if bad, sorry.

Back to pred. Replace that throwout bearing. When I did my new clutch and t/o bearing, it was like night and day difference in sound. Before I had a VERY noisy transmission on start up and idle. Now no more. The t/o bearing should turn freely in hand and make no noise. I could hardly turn it by hand and when I did it made a bunch of noise. Either way, it can't be good for your clutch or input shaft.

Mine (2WD) does the same. It rattles in neutral. Not noticable when cold. Get's louder with heat. I did the overfill, and was advised here to not worry as long as it operated correctly. That was 5K ago, all is well. No louder, noise hasn't changed, and raising the RPM quites it down. But, like you, I'd rather hear the Cummins.
