NEW'S FLASH ON 48RE!!!!!!!

O.K. guy's you'll never believe this crap. My zone manager called me not 5 minutes ago and told me that our zone was just givin a new 03 1-ton truck with the 48re and H.O. engine that is a pre production pre-spec model and he offered it to me because we sell so many trucks. Regretfully I turned it down because the darn thing is a 1-ton, 2wd, regular cab, with the laramie package. now who would ever want such a thing. They take the most sought after engine/tranny set-up there is and put it in a 2wd regular cab with the laramie package Jeez that makes me mad, if it was either a 4wd or a 2wd but with 4-doors I would have taken it but what the heck would I do with such a truck. He said they have only built about 25 of em and that they will not be in regular production for another month or 2. Man I can't believe this.

Re:NEW'S FLASH ON 48RE!!!!!!!

O.K, O.K. I called him back, but.... he was at lunch, dang it. I left him a message to call me imediately. I'll tell him to send me an invoice so I can see exactly what this thing is. I asked himwhat the package was and he told me it was a 2UH ??? who knows, I am eagerly waiting for his returned call. I don't know what I was thinking when he called before. momentary brain loss I guess I hope he still has it or I will be so sad :'( :'( :'(

Re:NEW'S FLASH ON 48RE!!!!!!!

It is a dual rear wheel, and no it is a 2UH, I guess the U is the letter for the HO with 48re.

Re:NEW'S FLASH ON 48RE!!!!!!!

48RE is a model number, that doesn't tell us anything except there will be an automatic tranny for Dodge that is heavier than the 47RE. What will it be like, any major design changes, will it be mated with a new torque converter with lock-up in 2nd gear to be compatable with exhaust brake? ??? ??? ??? Rumors are flying, but that's is what they are Rumors.

Re:NEW'S FLASH ON 48RE!!!!!!!

I am not impressed with Dodge's "new" 48RE. It still uses most of the same components as the 47RE(clutch plates, steels etc...). It is the case and front pump assembly that is different. >

Re:NEW'S FLASH ON 48RE!!!!!!!

I agree with you Nigel, there is nothing impressive we have heard so far about the 48RE. Truly a slightly heavier remake of the 47RE can easily be met with skepticism.

On the other hand I believe that it is too early to pass judgment on a redesigned product. To do so at this time would be like "throwing the baby out with the bath water". Only time will tell as the new tranny is tested and used if they have truly improved this product enough to be mated with the Cummins High Output Engine.

Some would feel that it should be a clone of the Allison tranny, of course just enough changes to avoid patent infringment. If that were the case D-C's Research and Development would not be doing their job. Of course they should know the strengths of the Allison tranny. I'm sure they have and they also know its weaknesses. They are aware of the weaknesses and strengths of the 47RE tranny as well. You Build on what you have that is good and redesign the weak points on what you have. If you build from scratch you have a truly unknown quantity.

Marketing an unknown quantity even though field test are highly favorable is the basis of corporate disaster. With the everwatchful management eye from the German half of D-C, The R and D engineers are under the gun to produce a reliable 48RE. To to anything less will mean the end of their careers with D-C.

We don't know how the 48RE will survive the abuse it will be given by the drivers of Ram trucks. That will pass judgement on the 48RE. ??? ???
