Newbie Questions On Pulling
I attended scheid diesel extravaganza this weekend and it was awesome. Makes me want to start participating in some of the local truck pulls. I have a 04.5' 3500 quad cab dually 4x4, you can see my mods in my signature. Anyway, I have a six speed manual, and was wondering what the best way to start out on the track is in what gear ?? Low Or HI 4x4 ?? Ect. My other concern is should I be worried about tearing my truck up participating in the street class diesel truck events ?? This is my daily driver so I can't afford to tear it up. I just think it would be a lot of fun to participate in some of the truck pulls. It seems like most guys tear things up when they start hopping at the end instead of just cutting it down and stopping. Anyway, any info. or help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
matt

HOHN I'm sorry but a I have to disagree. You can brake stuff, and you will if like you said you dont back out of it when you start hopping. when you start hopping shut'er down. I've done about 10 pulls with my pickup. 3 were on the stock clutch. Haven't broke anything yet. I pulled in 4 low 3rd gear. Brought the rpm's up to about 1700-1800 and start leting the clutch out. Dont slip it to long or it will keep sliping. Once I got started I let off the throttle a little to make sure the clutch wasnt slipping and the got back on it. Try it. Have fun with it.

Just remember YOU HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY, if you are going to pull I would be sure to keep a wad of dough in the bank just in case something does break.

ihpower- I dont really agree with that Ive seen quite a few pullers around my area that run 4hi in 4th gear. granted their runnin dd clutches but just like in any pull wheel speed is a factor.

Whatever the case maybe
If u have money to burn and can afford to destroy a clutch, then go up to third or fourth on four high or four low, If i was gonna pull, seein that its my only ride, and i have a stock clutch, id go second and low.. end of story, what good is having so much power (not me of coarse tho) if you cannot properly put it to the ground?

I agree with 95 ram. I went to my first pull last weekend - asked a lot of questions. The one guy w/ a manual tranny stated he started in 4th gear, 4-low; brought her up to about 2k, slowly slipped the clutch for 10-20 feet, put the right foot to the floor and held on! (He had 4 full pulls, so he must have been doing something right!) He did have a dd clutch, and was pushing 550 hp/950 tq. IMO; for your setup: 4low, 2nd or 3rd, slip it a little to get'er rolling, then punch it and go!
