A 92 has a crank position sensor, so if you get the right kind of tach you can use this and you don't need the alternator tach/probe.
But since you already have that tach, that sensor clamps on the outside of the alternator and position it so that it can see through the air vents on the alternator. Hopefully that makes sense, if not maybe someone else can explain it better, or I'll try. Hope that helps a little.

i need more info about the pre-wired tach hookups, i found it.... but not sure if it will work with mine. also it says that the tach needs to be calibrated. but no shop around here seems to think they could do that....

I don't think the tach you have can use the crank sensor, it take a certain type of tach. I had what looked like a factory tach that mounted on the steering column.
You have to get an optical tach, to calibrate your tach. Someone else on hear just did that setup, i'm sure he'll chime in soon and give more info. I don't have first hand experience with it, just what I've heard. sorry. |

There is a pipe plug underneath the intake horn, above and behind the injection pump in the intake manifold. That is where I put mine, most people put it there.

Its kind of next to the boost reference line that goes to the top of the injection pump, towards the rear of the truck at about the same level. Someone on here has a picture of it. There was a thread a few days ago about it.

Mount the tach probe approximately in the middle of the alternator. If it's jumpy at high rpm, move the probe forward or back until it's smooth. I had to fiddle with mine a little bit, but it works smooth now.
Any shop with a scan tool can plug into the diagnostic port on your truck and look at the RPM while the engine is running (this only applies to '92 and '93 trucks). Calibrate the tach with the engine running around 2000 RPM for the best accuracy.

well mine is actually jumpy at low RPM i am gonna go out and try fiddleing with the sender... Also when the key is truned on and truck isn't started the needle goes straight down... then the key is turned backwards to Accesories.... the neddle goes to about the same place but just keeps flipping out... i like to leave the stereo running in my truck sometimes, so this unsettles me.
boost numbers are in as well...lol a whoping 13psi at WOT on a steep hill. |

check for a hole in your intercooler boots, I had a hole in the one on the intercooler on the passenger side, I was only getting that much with mine stock even with a 16cm housing.

hey, wannadiesel.... what does your tach do if the truck is off and you put the key to the ON or Acc. position? mine flips out, and if i put on the hazards or use the power windows, i moves the tach.... i thought it was the groud.... i have run it to the body ground in front of the battery with 10gauge wire, so i think it rules that out.... HELP!

the tach is real sensitive and if your alt is charging heavy it will jump ...like if you had left your lights on or radio for a while mine did the same thing I also ran the ground to the battery, but once you find the right spot on the alt it works real good
