My 47RE has lived up to its reputation

I paid $400 to have it towed 200 miles back to my house.

I did not want to leave it a some local shop and then later calling me
up saying it is ready, but they had to rebuild and that would be $4000

It started to not shift into overdrive after a stop at a light. I
pulled over and shut it down and started backup and it was working
fine till down shift then it would not go back up to overdrive again.
I pulled over again and tried going again. This time the trans would
not engage in any gear.

While Driving during this episode I noticed the trans temp was rather
low, < 140 degress which makes me think a lack of fluid flow.

Fluid is a bit high and it's nice and bright red.

I believe so-in-so had mentioned before with someone else that had a
similar problem that it could be a "sticking valve body or a mis-
behaving governor pressure sensor"

I would say that a shaft or drum broke, or maybe a snap ring broke. Fluid will look good but truck wont move. The fluid looks good because the clutches did not slip. You will need to disassemble it to see what broke.

Thumbs up

Just now I went again and tried to drive it.

I bit a reving and it started moving and driving.
I stopped after 10 feet and put it in reverse.
Started slow like forward, but this time in reverse it was, I guess the best
was to describe it was, jumping or lurching back, but it did go back and I
stopped in original spot.

Tried forward again and it refused to go forward again.

This makes me really think some valve is stuck, but what I don't know.

I unscrewed the drain plug (The pan is made by HY-TECH)? and it has a magnetized head on it.

On the head was some metallic sludge. It looked like it had been there for a long time. I forgot to take a picture before I wiped it off.

In the pan is nothing and fluid is still bright red.
I still have to remove the filter which is made from a metal mesh. I don't know if that is good or not.

One of the three screws is strangly metric hex so I have to go and buy a metric hex set now.

Update later on.

The metallic sludge is clutch material and perfectly normal for a trans with some miles on it. Once you get off that filter snap a few pics, there are some great mechs on this forum that are very helpful.

Yeah I am. I am starting to winder if it is the filter.
I posted a picture, but wait for approval.
It is quite black and looks like it has a lot of deposits in it including a few tiny metal filings.
