The Frame

Hi all, I am building a crew too... Haven't started yet though. Frame question. I am starting with my 1992 Dodge cummins 4X4 and using an all original 1984 1 ton crew. Wouldn't it save time during construction to measure and section cut the 92 dodge diesel frame and weld in the crew cab section of the frame. Of course boxing in the sectioned areas to reinforce and strengthin. Or is it easier to convert the 2wd frame to 4X4 and "timeconsuming switching over all the 4X4 brackets hangers and crossmembers? Isn't he diesel frame more beefy? Thanks for any and all input.

Welcome to the DTR there brcron007!! Looks like a nice "donor" you have there. As for frames, looks like your 84 crew is a long box? If that is the case then you would be better off to have your frame stretched on the 92. Save you a lot of time and effort. I would have it professionally done if it were me.

The crewcab short box trucks are only 1/2" longer in wheel base then the club cab long box trucks, 119.5" to 120" if I remember correctly.

After doing a longbox crewcab I would say just convert the crew to 4x it's easier then you think just to convert my old crew to 4x took 1 week that was driving it in the garage and driving it back out yes no front drive line at first but still ran and drove fine down road
Feel free to ask question's I am working on second crew longbox as we speak .

Thank you....I will be starting mine this summer when it warms up and after rainy season....If it's alright I'd like to hit you guys up on advice this summer. Trying to round up most of the gaskets, bushings, 4 inch lift kit, and odds and ends. This is so that I can make the switch over go relativly seemless and smoothly without having to wait on ordering things. Thanks, Ron

Does simplsmn and thrashingcows have a gallery somewhere of your pics?

My 1984 all original, original paint 1984 Crew Cab zero rust.

You could easily section the front part of the 4wd frame and put it on your crew. I did something similar with mine except I wanted the long bed section of the donor truck. Only one splice in the frame that way. Didn't take to long to do if you've got access to a place that can bend you some inserts to strengthen the splice. I've got around 50 thousand on mine and no problems so far.

Mine

I bought this one out of MO with the 92 cummins drivetrain already swapped in.

You can follow my rebuild here.

I'm doing from the frame down first then the paint and body work will be next. Should have the new front suspension done by the end of Feb.

brcron007 I think you posted the first pic of a "donor" that I would say don't do it. That is a nice looking truck. I would make the old crew frame a 4x4. Just the route I would go.

I have a black '85 crew with a '90 Cummins / 727 / 3.07 geared, I drive in the summer.
I also have a '85 crew gasser that if the 360 / 4 speed ever goes will be getting a 12V 5-speed combo.
Both are 4x4
