A "lift pump" lifts the fuel from the tank and supplys the injection pump.

Happened to me not too long ago. It took them a week to get the part as well. I think I had about 65 000 km's or pretty close to it.

The pump is mounted on the backside of the fuel filter housing.

The LP is fairly easy to replace, and they should be instock at any Cummins dealer or repair shop.

Just ask the Cummins parts guy. I'm sure they will have the number in their head!
![]() The LP is a common replacement item. Some guys get 100K miles other get 30K or less. The next investment you should make is an incab fuel pressure gage to monitor the LP. If it goes bad it can ruin the $1,500 injector pump. $60 for a gauge is cheap insurance. Search this site for "lift pump" and you'll have hours of reading and great info. |

Geico266, no damage is done to the common rail injection pump if the lift pump dies. The truck will barely or won't run at all without the lift pump. In fact, the CP3 pump doesn't need a lift pump. But the small fuel lines and tank design require the lift pump on the Dodge. The Duramax has the same CP3 pump but doesn't have a lift pump. The major drawback of not having a lift pump is priming the fuel filter after changing it.

it will just stop running no warning. i don't think a gauge will help. there were no signs at all. one minute it's running great the next it's dead. just hope it's not while your in the middle of a turn. the steering is really hard with out power. stops fast but steers s####.

A gauge will confirm the dead pump, no guestion as to whats wrong. I know gauges are not for everyone. I used to carry a lift pump under the rear seat on my '00 after two of them failed. The VP-44 would fail if the lift pump failed.

Mine was replaced at about 20k miles. Cam position sensor was replaced at the same time.
Reliable, economical truck. Dodge would not next day air the pump to the dealer even if I paid the freight.
