Hey guys, I need help. I got a 99 Frieghtliner FL 80, it has a 3126 cat (300 hp)- with a eaton-fuller 9 spd-- I was wandering if jakes can be installed on this truck,, wander what it would cost...

i think so but i cant help with cost. i just dont know. you would need the valve cover(s) the jakes and wiring harness, and dash switches. I would imagine the engine harness has the plug but you would have to have it activated in the engine computer

You can't put a real jake brake on it, but you can install an exhaust brake. I pestered management until they put one on my work truck (same motor as yours but in a Sterling tandem axle w/10 speed) and it made a huge difference. Downshifting slows you down instead of just making the engine noisier.

The Pacbrake PXRB is a good one. It works better at low RPM than the older orifice type brakes, but it wasn't around back when I got mine.

You can do the bolt together, plumbing, and electrical yourself but you need a shop to reprogram the ECM. Have the shop that flashes the ECM enable fan braking too, the fan does almost as much as the exhaust brake. I think installed cost was a little under $2k - but if it saves one brake job over the life of the truck it's pretty much paid for itself. I got 95k out of my last set of rear brakes, which is pretty good in local P&D service.

all diesels can have an exhaust brake installed. basically an exhaust brake adds a way to slow down flow of exhaust gases.

brake is either an inline or clamped on to turbo housing. within brake will be a butterfly valve controlled either by vacuum or air pressure servo. which is in turn controlled by a electric selenoid.

so basically one wire controls solenoid's function. this control wire can be feed to an ECM or a series of switches to clutch/fuel pump/accelerator pedal/etc.

for a manual tranny... clutch has to be engage with no fuel entering engine before exhaust brake can engage.

certain diesel engines require installation of stronger exhaust springs to keep valves from floating.

Yes, but there is a big difference in an exhaust brake and what everyone calls a "Jake Brake".

jake uses the actuall engine cylinders for braking where the exhaust doesnt, hence it is called an engine brake

Jake Brake is an engine compression brake that operates the exhaust valves and decompresses the engine absorbing power. Exhaust brake just adds exhaust back pressure so the cylinder does not scavenge completely and that absorbs power.

Price shipped to my door was under $1000.00 and it took about 4 hrs for me to do the install. No doubt the best $1000.00 I've spent on the truck.

In stall the trigger jake heads on there along with the exhaust brake and you will like that too.
