Injection Pump Timing

I have a 1995 with a 4" exhaust, cold air intake, 90hp torque plate, 50hp injectors. I have the injection timing stock. What would everyone recommend that I advance the timing to? I have heard that if you go past 17* you can have problems with the stock head gasket. Also, what are the advantages of advancing the timing? Is it power, lower egt's or what? Thanks
