If that question was posed to me I'd take the 7.3 Powerstroke in a heart beat over the D-Max. Especially if it were the 99-early 2000. I personally don't care to much for D-Maxs.

Be careful of getting stuck with a Mega Hemi. You can't give them away around here. In CO a used 1500 Mega with 30-40k miles only fetches $15000 give or take. You'll have waaay better resale on a real 1/2 ton extended or crew cab and I bet they won't dump the Mega for less than a Quad Cab even though they're not very popular.
Expand your horizons looking for a truck....and a lender. Sounds like there's one used car lot in town and you're checking out the car of the week each week. No offense.
Try a credit union. I haven't had a used car loan, or any car loan for some time, but just got a used boat loan thru a credit union no problem. If your credit's that bad, you probably don't have a pile of money in the closet either, so don't get sucked into something you can't afford or is a losing proposition just to build credit. If you don't need a truck, build your credit up with something else, like buying some property or take a collateral loan against your vehicles and use the money for something wise, investment or start a business or something.

I'd definately shy away from the gasser dodge as Grit said. Seems like F150's hold value dang well followed up by chevys/gmc. Seems like the crew cabs sell better used. We ran across some 09 xlt F150 crew cabs back about 6 months right under 25K new with the small V8 2wd.... Very nice daily/work trucks is what we thought, very comfy.

If you wanna build credit you need to have equity in it because they look at that when loaning for other things, being upside down is pretty obvious. Put 20% down plus what tax costs ya so you won't be upside down.

First and foremost. Don't try and build credit with more debt. This is a dumb idea and a part of why this recession is where it is.

You can go a lot further by SAVING some money, maybe getting a credit card, and PAYING it OFF every month.

Hmmm. Old-world ideas. Never had a loan in my life, but paid off every credit card bill in full, on time. Went to get a morgage and found they really wanted to lend me money. Hope it's the only loan I ever have.

Please----save your money instead.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?

yeah i passed on all the above. Came out they just wanted what i wasnt willing to pay for. I mean what it all came down too was trying to reestablish credit for the security of having it. I do have money now. I lost a job in 06 for a extended period of time. Reason for building credit is would like to buy a house. Rent is dumb but with the score i cant get approved. I have a few cards raised me about 30 points last 6 months. my banker suggested getting a car loan or something of the sort.

OHHHH oh a great note, got a letter from my local dodge dealer wanting to buy my 04 ram 2500. for 12300 ha ha thats the book? wow

When mileage is that much of a difference, always go with the lower mileage. D-max in this case. If the mileage was the other way around, I would have said Ford.
I think the engine is the least of the worry. Remember everything else on the Ford from seats, heater core, ball joints, tranny and etc has 290,000 miles on them too.

7.3 Powerstroke. No question a good second choice to the Cummins.
