Head O-ring

Stopped by a machine shop to ask questions about the 12V rebuild I'm planning.
I asked about o-ringing the head and they said they prefer to O-ring
the block vs the head.
Is this an acceptable alternative?

when the head gets rebuilt, especially when overheated, with warping, milling to flat will remove the protruding oring wire, the block usually wont necessitate deck milling.

The rings are removable. the reasoning behind them being on the block is to make them easier to assemble. though I don't know if it is a good idea or not. Depends on where the water jackets are in relation to the bottom of the groove.

I know of several people who have done it. Nothing wrong with cutting orings in the block. Have at it.

That's good to know. It seems like it would be easier to assemble that way.
At least one less worry to deal with.

They say that in a Cummins application it's better to have the orings in the head because the part of the fire ring in the head gasket that crushes the most is the top side that contacts the head but orings in the block will still help plenty and not hurt anything.

Do it in the block. If at any time in the future the head needs to be machined, the grooves would need to be recut to maintain the proper depth. Although this shouldn't happen for years to come but it would save the extra work. The block rarely needs to be decked.
