sounds like a sending unit to me. lift your bed and check it, its easy to take apart. either the float fell apart or the circuit board went out. its really an easy fix. i think i paid like 50 bucks for a new one

i heard about that too. hopefully someone will chime in and help. about a month back i had to clean the filter in the tank because it was clogged and left me stranded. had to get towed home. anyways i cleaned it and connected everything, well i guess one of the wires wernt connected tight and my fuel gauge stopped working again. i ended up saying screw it, i just use my trip meter now. so like you said, if it was working but now its not, it could also be a loose connection. sometimes when i fill up it will start working and go to full, but as soon as i get on the road, it stops again
i would start with the sending unit first. just loosen the bolts and have a few buddies tilt the bed sideways and shove a long piece of 2x4 under the bed to hold it up |

Check the plug going into the module. Mine have an intermittant connection problem everyonce and a while where it goes to empty, or about 1/16th tank, even though I may have just filled it up. Disconnect the plug and clean it real well with contact cleaner.

Not sure about this but on older cars you could ground the lead going to the sender and the gauge would go to full. This would tell you if the gauge was good.

Unless the problem is evident once you pull the sender out of the tank, you can check the condition of the sender by using an ohm meter. 20/200 ohms is the range for these senders. 20 being the 'full tank' end of resistance, 200 on the 'empty' side. It's a good indicator in your process of elimination. Pulling the tank is not a waste of time because you can clean the thing out - and they do get a bit gooey after time.

Glad you got that fixed!
![]() Out of curiosity, which part number did you get? My '99 had an odd-ball sending unit used only for a couple of years in the 2nd Gen. I had to use part #4897669AB. Just wondered if all '99's were the same. |
