Cummins Conv. Tach & Cruise not working

I just picked up a 94 F350 that was originally a powerstroke. It now has a cummins 12 valve. The tach & cruise don't work and I'm looking for ideas. It has a ford alternator on it. People have posted that if it was originally a IDI the tach is easy to make work. What would be difference in the tachs?

www.fordcummins.com has a kit that will make the tach work.

I may have to try them, but I've read a lot of bad things about them. It seems like they have a lot of unhappy customers.
