Does my Tow Package charge trailer battery - Dodge Diesel

I just bought a travel trailer and the guy at the dealer told me the battery in the trailer will charge off of the truck if its set up for it. I was wondering if the factory wiring on and 05 will charge my battery? i know the pin in the center of the 7 pin harness in a power but will it charge or do i have o do something diffrent?

Your trailer batteries will be getting a charge from your truck.

I don't know how much, but I do know on my last trip, the trailer batteries went low (heater wouldn't start, fridge changed modes and water pump was weak) and all I did was plug it into the truck, didn't even start the truck and we were able to use the trailer 12v electronics for the rest of the trip and it didn't affect the truck at all.

I've never checked the fuse size but the wire is small so the amps won't be very high. Having some voltage drop from the truck to the rv is probably good so the rv batteries won't be constantly charging at ~14.5 on a long trip. Craig

The 12v trailer pin is hot all the time and has a 15 or 20 amp fuse (I think it has a dedicated fuse). If there is a voltage differential the low batteries will drain the charged ones till they reach a balance point. Under normal running conditions the alternator will be the highest voltage and charge everything hooked up to it. When you park I recommend disconnecting the trailer plug to prevent draining the trucks starting batteries. A lot of RVs have generators and that can be used for recharging or restart the truck and then plug the trailer pin back in.

It's not the center pin. That one's for reverse lights on a 7-pin connector. The power terminal on the truck connector is at the top right.

i have a split RV plug so i can charge the battery in my camper and run it's clearance light and the i also runs the clearance lites and charges the little battery for my enclosed trialer... it works just fine ..

It will charge the battery but very slowly. It will on a very long trip. There is just a lot of voltage drop from your alternator to the trailer battery due to the size of the wires they use. As indicated above, you can use the truck's system to power 12 volt stuff in the trailer but you run the risk of running down the truck's battery to the point it won't start. As well, your truck's battery was never designed for deep cycle use. Casey
