How to: DIY Transmission low speed shudder fix
we talked about it being a TSB over here:
http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/d...d.php?t=226127 and basically, if you are out of warranty, it's gonna be a BUCKET of money. if you have the dealer adjust your tranny bands, it's gonna be...a BUCKET of money. if you have the dealer do your tranny fluid and filter...you guessed it. so you may as well put in a drain plug while you are in there. you can see my major spillage I had in one shot. i thought last time, that huge tin serving pan caught it all. TSB 21-009-07 Models: 2004 - 2007 (D1/DH/DR) Ram Truck (2500/3500) Overview: This bulletin involves the replacement of the governor pressure solenoid valve in the transmission valve body. Symptom/Condition: The customer may experience a 1-2 shift transmission hunt during light throttle application. This condition may be due to a governor pressure solenoid valve. Diagnosis: If the customer experiences the above condition perform the Repair Procedure. Parts Required: Qty. Part No. Description 1 04617210 Valve, Governor Pressure Solenoid 4 05013457AA ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid AR 02464324AC Gasket, Transmission Oil Pon (Note: Original pan gasket is reusable and should not require replacement). 50 images here: draining the water from the fuel filter (notice i caught the pint of diesel and spilled the gallon of ATF), ![]() greasing the fuel filter o-ring, and the SQUISH of the grease showing you got the cap on the filter tight. ![]() here's the pan removed, I put the jack back about the middle of the door, so i had room to work the screws are REALLY long. ![]() slide the red LOCK back, then push the tab in to disconnect, and there is a white tab on the solenoid itself push on the snout of the solenoid to push the whole assembly off the block ![]() MSRP is ~$120 or so, dealer cost is around $80 or so. ![]() R2D2's uncle? ![]() you gotta put the solenoid in the retainer plate to install it, and get the arm of the retaining plate over the black thingie on the end - the retaining plate holds the solenoid and the black thingie (that had the wires on it) ![]() "help" section in advance. this was ~$6. ATF-4 is $6 a quart. so if you can catch & re-use your fluid (I did this repair a month after I did the fluid & filter) you can save ~$35 worth of fluid. ![]() the magnet comes off the pan to clean it. I put the drain in the only corner that looked like it would not hit anything. I should have put it more to the center, it ended up being curved up too much, and i had to shape it a bunch with a hammer & anvil to get a good flat mating surface, then i ground all the rough edges off. ![]() i tightened it TOO MUCH and squished the plastic washer out (a CD Spindle washer could be used to replace it) I think a flat metal washer above the plastic would have distributed the clamping forces better, on the inside & outside. (i thought of that AFTER i had the sealant on there) ![]() i THINK this is the pesky loose coolant hose that leaks red coolant that looks like ATF. You have included 11 images in your message. You are limited to using 10 images so please go back and correct the problem and then continue again. |

this looks like a better fix, and about the same price
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm do a Control F (find) for 9-25-2008, and it will find this para: This kit was specifically designed to handle higher base pressure in high performance applications and to improve the reliability of the governor solenoid in normal use. In performance units the pressure can flood the Dodge solenoid and cause a no shift condition at full throttle. This is the fix. Fits all rear wheel drive RE model transmissions. Added 9-25-2008. Cost $149.00 I put the stock part back in mine...... and I still get a little tiny stutter ever once a while |

It took me SO long to get this resolved. I have had her in numerous times for this "shutter".
Finally the dealer replaced VB after performing the TSB and my prob is gone. Just FYI for those that the TSB has not fixed..

FWIW, i took my other car into a tranny shop, and he said they no longer use the OEM part, they use one similar to the second post. |

I think it was in the "HELP" section at advance.
just don't "gorilla fist" when you put it on, the washers will crush out |

i just performed this to my '06 mega. i repl. the solenoid and pressure sensor and filter. it fixed the shutter, but my tranny is still shifting out of 2nd at 2500 rpm, too high. i talked to trans. shop and they think maybe bands. i think modified valve body should work.

band adj.
had my band adjusted on outside of tranny and it shifts like new. evidently these really should be adj. every 30K or so according to trans. shop. adjustment was free.
