Cracked flywheel!?

Hi guys,

Doing an engine swap: 4BT into '60's Dodge. It's a mix/match of parts to make it work. Got a 98W-350 Diesel flywheel from a Atlas Auto Wreckers, in Hubbard, Oregon and it's got 2 cracks in it. Don't know if that's normal or what, but it doesn't look too good. Seen it in gassr flywheels and no big deal.

One's about 1 1/2" long and starts at inner edge of friction surface, the other about 3/4" long at outer edge of friction surface. The short one has another small crack beside it. Located [as if you divided up flywheel into 4 segments] at 9 o'clock and the other at 12 o'clock. What do you think? Useable? Haven't called the wreckers back yet and return shipping would be expen$ive. Not real happy here......

Are they heat cracks, or actual cracks that go clear through??

I'd say heat cracks on surface. Can't Magnaflux to be sure. Found a 3rd one at 3 o'clock.

I know nothing of flywheels, so can't help you there. If you find it's not useable though, you shouldn't have to pay for return shipping. I would think a digital cam and some pics should be enough for the place to send you a new one or give you a refund. It should have been checked before being shipped and most reputable companies would either offer a refund or send out a new one for no charge.

Yea, I'm more than a little upset about this! Every place I checked on clutches that mentions resurfacing flywheels says: NO CRACKS! Great. Like I say I haven't called them on it yet, just noticed this morning.

The best person to answer question would be a shop that turns flywheel!

put up some pic and will all give you are apinion but you now what thay say about apinions...........

with out seeing it and form what you have said........i'd say turn it!!

I have seen some vary deep appering crack that didn't take much to turn out!

Well, I think I really blew it here, guys! I blabbed away here before engaging my brain. From the sounds of my post I got a bad deal from Atlas Auto Wreckers.

NOT SO!!! I called Phil the owner this morning after I had posted, WHICH IS WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE BEFORE I POSTED. He had no problem with exchanging it and was entirely friendly and reasonable about it. Mistakes happen and this just happened to be one of them. He has another Cummins truck coming in tomorrow but doesn't know if it's manual or auto and is going to call me.

So things are looking up. I'll let y'all know what finally comes down......thanks for advice!
